How to use the Improper Fraction to Mixed Number Calculator
Type the improper fraction as numerator/denominator, for example 17/5.
Press Convert (the answer also updates as you type).
Read the mixed number, then follow the long division and the steps to see where it comes from.
Check the bar model: green bars are whole ones, orange parts are the leftover fraction.
Need the other direction? Choose Mixed number → improper fraction and type something like 3 2/5.
How to convert an improper fraction to a mixed number
An improper fraction is just a division that has not been carried out yet. 17/5 means "17 divided by 5", so the conversion is a short division with a remainder:
Divide the numerator by the denominator: 17 ÷ 5 = 3 with a remainder of 2.
Write the quotient (3) as the whole number.
Write the remainder (2) over the original denominator (5): 2/5.
Simplify the fraction part if the remainder and denominator share a factor.
So 17/5 = 3 2/5. To check, reverse it: 3 × 5 + 2 = 17, over 5.
In words: the denominator tells you how many parts make one whole. Every time you collect that many parts you get one whole, and whatever is left over is the fraction part.

Tips and common mistakes
Keep the original denominator for the fraction part. A common slip is writing the quotient there instead.
The remainder is always smaller than the denominator. If it is not, the division went wrong.
Recipes and measurements usually use mixed numbers (2 1/4 cups), while algebra prefers improper fractions because they are easier to multiply and divide.
Times tables help. To divide 45 by 6 quickly, find the largest multiple of 6 that fits in 45 (42 = 6 × 7); the remainder is 45 − 42 = 3.
Frequently asked questions
How do you turn an improper fraction into a mixed number?
Divide the numerator by the denominator. The quotient is the whole number, the remainder becomes the new numerator, and the denominator stays the same. Then simplify the fraction part if you can. For 17/5: 17 ÷ 5 = 3 remainder 2, so 17/5 = 3 2/5.
What is an improper fraction?
A fraction whose numerator is equal to or larger than its denominator, such as 7/4 or 5/5. Its value is 1 or more, so it can be written as a whole number or a mixed number.
Then the fraction equals a whole number with no fraction part. For example 12/4 = 3.
How do I convert a negative improper fraction?
Convert the positive version and put the minus sign in front of the whole mixed number: −7/2 = −(3 1/2) = −3 1/2. The minus sign applies to both the whole number and the fraction part.
How do I change a mixed number back to an improper fraction?
Multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the numerator and keep the denominator: 3 2/5 = (3 × 5 + 2)/5 = 17/5. Choose the reverse direction in the calculator to see the steps.
Should I simplify before or after converting?
Either works. Simplifying 22/8 to 11/4 first gives 2 3/4 directly; converting first gives 2 6/8, which simplifies to the same 2 3/4.
