About Memorial Day

Memorial Day began after the American Civil War as Decoration Day, when people decorated the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. General John A. Logan called for a national day of remembrance on 30 May 1868. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved it to the last Monday of May from 1971, creating a three-day weekend.

Memorial Day is different from Veterans Day (11 November), which honours everyone who has served. A National Moment of Remembrance is observed at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day.

How the countdown is worked out

The target is midnight at the start of Memorial Day in your device's time zone.
