The real degree sign vs look-alikes
The degree sign is Unicode U+00B0. Several other characters look almost the same, and they often slip in through keyboard shortcuts or autocorrect. They may look fine on screen, but search engines, screen readers, spreadsheets and translation tools treat them as different characters, so “25ºC” may not be found by someone searching for “25°C”.

Writing temperatures and angles correctly
Celsius and Fahrenheit: number, degree sign, letter: 72°F, 22.2°C (US and most newspapers) or 22.2 °C with a space (SI and many scientific journals). Never separate ° from its letter, and don’t mix styles in one document.
Kelvin: no degree sign and always a space: 295.37 K. Convert with K = °C + 273.15.
Conversions: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 and °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. The scales meet at −40°, where −40 °C = −40 °F.
Angles and coordinates: no space between the number and °: a 90° angle, 40° 42′ 46″ N. Minutes use the prime ′ (U+2032) and seconds the double prime ″ (U+2033), not apostrophes or quotation marks. One degree = 60′ = 3,600″.
In running text, style guides such as AP spell out “degrees” in some contexts (“a 45-degree angle”), while tables, recipes and weather data use the symbol.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Alt code for the degree symbol?
Hold Alt and type 0176 on the numeric keypad (Num Lock on), then release Alt to get °. Alt+248 also works in most Windows apps because 248 is the degree sign in the old DOS code page. Laptops without a keypad can use Win + . (period) and the Symbols tab instead.
How do I type the degree symbol on a Mac?
Press Option+Shift+8. Be careful: Option+0 types º (the masculine ordinal indicator) and Option+K types ˚ (ring above). They look similar but are different characters that screen readers and search engines do not read as “degrees”.
How do I type the degree symbol on an iPhone or Android phone?
On iPhone, switch to the 123 keyboard, press and hold the 0 key and slide to °. On Android with Gboard, tap ?123, then =\< and tap ° on the second symbol page; Samsung Keyboard has it on page 2 of the symbols.
How do I insert the degree symbol in Word or Excel?
In Word, type 00B0 and press Alt+X, or press Ctrl+Shift+@ then Space, or use Alt+0176. In Excel and Google Sheets, =UNICHAR(176) returns °, and a custom number format such as 0.0"°F" adds the symbol while keeping the cell numeric.
Should there be a space between the number and °C?
Style guides differ. The SI (International System of Units) puts a space before °C (20 °C) but not before an angle degree (90°). Many US publications and weather reports write 72°F with no space. Whatever you choose, never put a space between ° and the C or F, and be consistent.
Is it 300 K or 300 °K?
300 K. Since 1967 the kelvin has been an absolute unit written without a degree sign and read as “300 kelvins”, not “degrees kelvin”. Only Celsius and Fahrenheit temperatures use the ° symbol.
What is the HTML code for the degree symbol?
Use ° or the numeric codes ° and °, for example 72°F. In CSS use content: "\00B0" and in JavaScript "\u00B0". On a UTF-8 web page you can also paste ° directly.
