Which check mark should you use?
Documents, tables and plain text: ✓ (thin) or ✔ (bold). They take the surrounding text color and size, print well and are supported by nearly every font.
Forms and printed to-do lists: ☐ for an empty box and ☑ or ☒ once it is done. On paper ballots and official forms, ☒ often means “selected”, not “rejected”, so read the form’s instructions.
Chats and social media: ✅ and ❌ stand out in color. Keep in mind that ❎ is green but means “no”, which confuses some readers.
Yes/no or pass/fail columns: pair ✓ with ✗, or ✔ with ✘, so both marks have the same weight.
Code and web pages: on a UTF-8 page you can paste the character directly; use ✓ where encoding is uncertain, and add an aria-label or visible text such as “Yes” so screen readers announce the meaning, not “check mark”.
Text style vs emoji style
Some characters, including ✔, ☑ and ✖, exist in both a monochrome text style and a colorful emoji style. Unicode lets you choose by adding an invisible variation selector: U+FE0F asks for the emoji look (✔️, ☑️) and U+FE0E asks for the text look (☑︎). Phones and messaging apps often default to emoji style, so if your tick suddenly turns into a colored icon, copy the text-style version above. Characters that are only emoji, such as ✅ and ❌, always appear in color.
A tick also does not mean “correct” everywhere. In Japan and South Korea, for example, a circle ○ is commonly used to mark a correct answer and a tick can mean incorrect, so for international audiences a plain word (“Yes”, “Done”) next to the symbol avoids confusion.
Frequently asked questions
How do I copy and paste a check mark?
Click the check mark you want on this page (for example ✓ or ✔). It is copied to your clipboard; then press Ctrl+V on Windows or Cmd+V on a Mac, or long-press and Paste on a phone, to insert it anywhere: documents, emails, chats, spreadsheets or social posts.
What is the Alt code for a check mark?
There is no standard Windows Alt code that types ✓ or ✔, because Alt codes only cover the old code page characters. Alt+251 types √ (square root), which looks similar and is often used instead. For a real check mark use Win + . (period) and search “check”, Word’s 2713 then Alt+X, or copy it from this page.
How do I insert a check mark in Microsoft Word?
Type 2713 and press Alt+X to get ✓ (2714 gives ✔, 2611 gives ☑). You can also use Insert > Symbol > More Symbols with the Segoe UI Symbol font, or switch to the Wingdings 2 font and press Shift+P for a tick or Shift+R for a ticked box.
What is the HTML code for a check mark?
Use ✓ or the numeric code ✓ (hex ✓) for ✓. The heavy check mark ✔ is ✔, the ticked box ☑ is ☑, the empty box ☐ is ☐ and the ballot X ✗ is ✗ or ✗. In CSS use content: "\2713".
What is the difference between ✓, ✔ and ✅?
✓ (U+2713) is a thin text check mark and ✔ (U+2714) is a bold one; both follow the text color. ✅ (U+2705, “check mark button”) is an emoji: a green box with a white tick that always shows in color. Phones may also show ✔ as an emoji unless the text variation selector is added.
How do I add a check mark in Excel or Google Sheets?
Enter =UNICHAR(10003) for ✓ or =UNICHAR(10007) for ✗; combine with IF to show a tick when a condition is met, e.g. =IF(B2>=100,UNICHAR(10003),UNICHAR(10007)). For clickable boxes use Insert > Checkbox in Google Sheets or the Checkbox control in Excel.
Why does my check mark show as an empty box or a different symbol?
The font in use has no glyph for that character. ✓, ✔, ☐ and ☑ are supported by almost every modern system, but newer ones such as 🗸 or 🗹 need recent fonts. Switching to a font like Segoe UI Symbol (Windows), Apple Symbols (Mac) or Noto Sans Symbols 2 usually fixes it.
