Tips for effective cloze worksheets
Leave the first sentence intact. Readers need some context before the first gap. Click the words of the first sentence to restore them if needed.
Space the blanks out. About one blank per 7 to 10 words keeps the text readable; denser gaps make it a guessing game.
Use equal-length lines for tests, so the line length does not give the answer away. Use word-length lines and first-letter hints for younger learners.
Add distractors to the word bank (words that fit the topic but not the gaps) to make students read more carefully.
Make versions: switch to Random words or Shuffle bank to produce different worksheets for neighbouring desks.
Print and PDF
Print worksheet sends only the worksheet to your printer (or to "Save as PDF") and starts the answer key on a new page. Download PDF creates a PDF file directly in your browser in US Letter or A4 format with real lines for the blanks, a boxed word bank and the answer key on separate pages. The text size option changes both the preview and the output.
Frequently asked questions
What is a cloze worksheet?
A cloze exercise is a text with some words removed. The reader fills each gap using the context, which tests reading comprehension, vocabulary and grammar. Fill-in-the-blank worksheets with a word bank are a gentler version, because students choose from the listed words.
How does auto-pick choose key words?
Key words are content words that are not common function words like 'the', 'and' or 'of'. The tool scores each distinct word by how often it appears and how long it is, then blanks the first occurrence of the top-scoring words, spread through the text. You can then click to add or remove any blank.
What is the classic every-Nth-word cloze?
The traditional cloze procedure deletes every 5th to 7th word of a passage. Here, Every Nth word blanks every Nth word but skips very short and common words, so blanks land on meaningful words. Set N to 5 for a harder test or 10 for an easier one.
How do I print without the answer key?
Untick Answer key before printing, or print only the first page(s): the answer key always starts on a new page. In the PDF it is on separate pages too.
Can I use it in other languages?
Yes. Words in any alphabet can be clicked and blanked, and the print version uses your browser fonts. The downloadable PDF uses standard Latin fonts, so for non-Latin scripts use Print and choose Save as PDF.
Is the text uploaded anywhere?
No. The worksheet is built in your browser, and the PDF is generated locally. Your text never leaves your device.
