Black, white, star or asterisk: reading the names
Unicode names describe shapes, not colors. A black star (★) is simply a filled star and a white star (☆) is an outline; both take whatever color your text is. Emoji such as ⭐, 🌟 and ✨ are different: your phone or computer draws them as small colored pictures, so they look a little different on Apple, Google, Microsoft and Samsung devices and ignore the text color.
Stars and asterisks are related but used differently. The keyboard asterisk * is a punctuation mark for footnotes, wildcards and multiplication in code. Its decorative cousins (✱ ✳ ✻ ❋) come from the Dingbats block, a set of ornaments originally taken from a classic printer’s font. The asterism ⁂ and the spaced dinkus * * * are traditional section-break marks in books and stories.
Tips for star ratings and decorative text
Pick a matched pair. ★ with ☆, ⭑ with ⭒ or ✦ with ✧ line up because they come from the same design; mixing ⭐ with ☆ works but the sizes rarely match.
Half stars need modern fonts. ⯪ (U+2BEA) arrived in Unicode 11.0 in 2018. If your audience may use older devices, round the rating or add the number, such as “★★★★☆ 4.5/5”.
Make ratings accessible. Screen readers announce each character (“black star, black star…”). On web pages add an aria-label like “4 out of 5 stars”, and in plain text keep the number next to the stars.
Prefer text stars for professional documents. ★ and ☆ print cleanly in black and white and scale with the font; save emoji stars for chats and social posts.
Combos are made of many characters. Decorations like ✧・゚: *✧・゚:* count toward character limits on usernames and bios, and some sites strip unusual characters, so test before you rely on them.
Frequently asked questions
How do I copy and paste a star symbol?
Click any star on this page, for example ★ or ☆. It is copied to your clipboard; then press Ctrl+V on Windows, Cmd+V on a Mac, or long-press and choose Paste on a phone to insert it into a document, chat, bio, spreadsheet or web page.
What is the Alt code for a star symbol?
There is no standard Windows Alt code for ★ or ☆, because Alt codes only cover the old code page characters; Alt+42 types a plain asterisk (*). To type a real star on Windows press Win + . (period) and search “star”, type 2605 then Alt+X in Word, or copy it from this page.
What is the HTML code for a star?
The filled star ★ is ★ or ★, numeric ★ (hex ★). The outline star ☆ is ☆ or ☆. The small star operator ⋆ is ⋆ (⋆) and the sparkle-like ✦ is ✦. In CSS use content: "\2605" for ★.
What is the difference between ★, ☆ and ⭐?
★ (U+2605, Black Star) is a filled text star and ☆ (U+2606, White Star) is its outline version; both follow the text color and font, which makes them ideal for star ratings. ⭐ (U+2B50, White Medium Star) is an emoji that always shows as a colored yellow star. In Unicode names, “black” means filled and “white” means outlined, not the actual color.
How do I make a star rating like ★★★★☆ with half stars?
Repeat ★ for each full star and ☆ for each empty one, so 4 out of 5 is ★★★★☆. For half stars Unicode 11 added ⯪ (U+2BEA, Star with Left Half Black), but many fonts still lack it, so the rating maker on this page also offers rounding or a numeric label such as “4.5/5”. For screen readers, add the rating as text too.
What is an asterism (⁂)?
An asterism ⁂ (U+2042) is three asterisks arranged in a triangle. It is a traditional typographic mark used to separate sections of a book or to draw attention to a passage. Today many writers use a centered row of three asterisks (* * *) or a dinkus for the same purpose.
Why do some stars show as empty boxes?
The font on your device has no glyph for that character. ★, ☆, ✦ and ✧ work almost everywhere, but newer symbols such as the half stars ⯪ ⯫ or the geometric stars 🟊 🟐 (Unicode 7 to 11) need recent fonts. Try a font like Segoe UI Symbol (Windows), Apple Symbols (Mac) or Noto Sans Symbols 2, or pick a widely supported alternative.
