How Old English (blackletter) text works
The gothic letters come from the Mathematical Fraktur and Bold Fraktur alphabets in Unicode. Fraktur was the dominant typeface in German-speaking countries for centuries; in English-speaking countries similar blackletter styles are associated with newspaper mastheads, diplomas and tattoos and are often called "Old English". Five Fraktur capitals (โญ โ โ โ โจ) come from the Letterlike Symbols block.

Frequently asked questions
What is Old English text?
What people call "Old English" lettering is blackletter or gothic script, used in European manuscripts and early printing. Unicode includes a blackletter alphabet called Mathematical Fraktur, which this tool uses.
Why do C, H, I, R and Z look a little different?
Those Fraktur capitals were added to Unicode earlier, in the Letterlike Symbols block (โญ, โ, โ, โ, โจ). The generator uses those official characters, so some fonts show them in a slightly different style.
Can I use this for a tattoo design?
You can use it to preview words in a blackletter style, but for a tattoo give the artist a high-resolution design from a proper blackletter font, as screen fonts vary.
Is bold Fraktur easier to read?
Yes. Bold Fraktur has thicker strokes and reads better at small sizes, for example in profile names.
Are numbers supported?
Unicode has no Fraktur digits, so numbers stay normal. Accented letters and punctuation are unchanged too.
Is it accessible?
Screen readers may read these characters by their Unicode names, so avoid using them for essential text.
