How underlined Unicode text works
Underlines are made with combining characters placed after each letter. The device draws the mark under (or over) the letter before it:

Frequently asked questions
How do I underline text on Instagram or X?
These apps have no underline button, but you can paste text that already includes Unicode combining underline marks. Type your text above, press Copy and paste it into your bio, caption or post.
Which Unicode characters are used?
Single underline uses U+0332 (combining low line), double uses U+0333, overline U+0305, dotted U+0324 and wavy U+0330. Each mark is added after every character.
Why is the underline broken between letters?
Some fonts draw the combining line only under the letter itself. Keep "Underline spaces too" switched on for a more continuous line, and note that results vary between apps.
Does underlined text count as more characters?
Yes. Each letter becomes two characters (letter + mark), and double styles like underline + overline become three.
Will it look like a link?
Underlined text can be mistaken for a link on some sites, so use it sparingly for headings or emphasis.
Is it accessible?
Screen readers read the letters but may announce or ignore the marks. Use it for decoration, not essential information.
