How to use the Emoji Cipher
Choose a secret key, type your own word or press Generate key. Leave it empty to use the standard emoji alphabet.
Type your message on the Encode tab; the emoji version appears instantly.
Copy the emoji message and send it, then tell your friend the key in person or in a separate message.
To decode, switch to the Decode tab, enter the same key and paste the emoji message.
Check the key table below if you want to decode by hand or print the key for a puzzle.
The standard emoji alphabet (no key)
With the key box empty, every letter uses an easy-to-remember emoji, mostly a picture whose English name starts with that letter. It is handy for kids' puzzles but offers no secrecy, because anyone can look it up.
The key is turned into a number with a hash function, and that number seeds a pseudo-random generator. The generator drives a Fisher-Yates shuffle of a pool of 79 emoji, and the first 37 emoji of the shuffled pool are assigned to A-Z, 0-9 and the space. Because the process is deterministic, the same key always rebuilds exactly the same table on any device, so the sender and the receiver never need to exchange the table itself, only the key. Since the pool is larger than the alphabet, different keys also use different sets of emoji, not just a different order.
Breaking a substitution cipher (and why longer messages are weaker)
Every emoji always stands for the same letter, so the pattern of the language shows through. In English, E, T, A, O and I are the most common letters, and the space is more common still. A code breaker counts which emoji appear most, guesses those letters, then looks for short words such as the, and and a. Short messages give too little data to analyze, which is why a one-line note is hard to crack, while a long paragraph can often be solved in minutes. Turning off Encode spaces reveals word lengths and makes guessing easier still. That is part of the fun for puzzles, and the reason this tool should never protect anything important.
Frequently asked questions
How does the emoji cipher work?
It is a substitution cipher. Each letter A-Z, each digit and the space is replaced by one emoji. The secret key is used as a seed to shuffle a pool of 79 emoji, so every key produces a different letter-to-emoji table, and the same key always produces the same table.
Does the receiver need the same key?
Yes. Decoding with a different key gives gibberish. Keys are case-sensitive, so Pineapple and pineapple are different keys. With no key at all the fixed standard alphabet is used, which anyone with this tool can read.
Is an emoji cipher secure?
No. It is a fun puzzle, not encryption. Like any simple substitution cipher it can be broken by frequency analysis on longer messages, because common letters such as E and T repeat often. Never use it for passwords or private data.
Why are my capital letters lost?
The cipher has one emoji per letter, not separate ones for upper and lower case, so decoded messages come back in lowercase. Accented letters are simplified to their base letter, for example รฉ becomes e.
What happens to punctuation?
Punctuation and symbols such as . , ! ? are kept as they are, which keeps messages readable. Digits and spaces are encoded by default, and you can switch either off.
Why do some emoji look different on another phone?
Apple, Google, Samsung and Windows each draw emoji in their own style, but the underlying characters are the same, so decoding still works. All emoji used here are from older Unicode versions that every current device supports.
Can I use this for a classroom or party puzzle?
Yes. Encode a clue, download the key table, and print both. Players decode it by hand, which is a nice introduction to how substitution ciphers work.
