How emojis are built (and why simple find-and-replace misses some)
Many emojis are not a single character. The tool splits text into grapheme clusters, the units a reader sees as one symbol, and removes the whole cluster:

Common reasons to remove emojis
Cleaning social posts or chat exports before analysis, translation or text-to-speech.
Databases or legacy systems that do not accept 4-byte UTF-8 characters.
Formal documents, subtitles, file names and SMS messages, where emojis can switch the message to a longer encoding.
Frequently asked questions
Does it remove flags and skin-tone emojis completely?
Yes. The tool works on grapheme clusters, so a flag (two regional indicator letters), a waving hand with a skin-tone modifier or a family made of several people joined with zero-width joiners is removed as one emoji, with no leftover pieces.
No. Digits, # and * are only removed when they are part of a keycap emoji such as 1️⃣ (digit + U+FE0F + U+20E3).
What does Extended_Pictographic mean?
It is a Unicode property that marks pictographic characters, including all emoji and the reserved ranges for future emoji. Using it, plus regional indicators and keycaps, catches emoji added in new Unicode versions as well.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Emoji detection uses your browser's built-in Unicode support, so the text never leaves your device.
Why do the character counts differ from what I see?
The before and after counts are UTF-16 code units, which is how JavaScript and many databases measure length. One emoji can use 2 to 14 or more code units, so removing a single complex emoji can shorten the text by many units.
