How to use the LaTeX Equation Editor
Type LaTeX in the editor, or pick a formula from Examples.
Click palette buttons to insert symbols and structures; selected text is wrapped, e.g. select a+b then click √.
Adjust the style: display or inline, size, color and background.
Export with Download PNG, Download SVG or Copy image.
For Word, press Copy MathML and paste into your document to get an editable equation.
LaTeX math cheat sheet
You want
Type
Notes
Fraction
\frac{a}{b}
\dfrac forces full size inline
Power, subscript
x^{2n}, a_{ij}
Braces are needed for more than one character
Square / nth root
\sqrt{x}, \sqrt[3]{x}
Sum, product
\sum_{i=1}^{n} i, \prod
Limits go above and below in display style
Integral
\int_0^1 f(x)\,dx
\, adds a thin space before dx
Limit
\lim_{x \to \infty}
Growing brackets
\left( \frac{a}{b} \right)
Every \left needs a \right
Matrix
\begin{pmatrix} a & b \\ c & d \end{pmatrix}
& separates columns, \\ ends a row
Cases
\begin{cases} 1 & x>0 \\ 0 & x\le 0 \end{cases}
Text inside math
\text{if } x > 0
Keeps normal spaces and upright letters
Number sets
\mathbb{R}, \mathbb{Z}
Blackboard bold
Vectors
\vec{v}, \mathbf{v}
Arrow or bold style
Which export to use
Microsoft Word: Copy MathML gives an editable Word equation. PNG works everywhere if you only need a picture.
Google Docs, Slides, Keynote, email: Copy image or a 2×–3× PNG. A transparent background blends with colored slides.
Websites and blogs: SVG stays sharp at any zoom; or copy the LaTeX and render it on the page with KaTeX or MathJax.
LaTeX documents, Overleaf, Markdown with math: Copy LaTeX and paste it between $ … $ (inline) or \[ … \] (display).
Common mistakes
Write \sin x, not sin x, so the function name is upright. Use \cdot or \times for visible multiplication. Group exponents with braces: e^{-x^2}, not e^-x^2. Spaces in math mode are ignored, so use \,, \quad or \text{ } when you need space.
Frequently asked questions
How do I put a LaTeX equation into Microsoft Word?
Press Copy MathML and paste into Word (Word 2013 and later, Microsoft 365). Word converts MathML into a native, editable equation. If your version pastes the code as text, use Copy image or Download PNG instead. Word's own equation editor also accepts much LaTeX-style input when you switch it to LaTeX mode.
How do I add an equation to Google Docs or Slides?
Press Copy image and paste into the document, or Download PNG and insert it with Insert > Image. Use a 2× or 3× PNG scale so the equation stays sharp when printed or zoomed.
What is the difference between display and inline style?
Display style is used for equations on their own line: fractions are full size and limits of sums and integrals go above and below the symbol. Inline style is the compact version used inside a sentence, with smaller fractions and limits placed to the side.
Which LaTeX commands are supported?
The editor uses KaTeX, which supports the common math commands of LaTeX and amsmath: fractions, roots, sums, integrals, limits, matrices (pmatrix, bmatrix, vmatrix), cases, aligned, Greek letters, accents, \mathbb, \mathbf, \text and many symbols. Document commands such as \documentclass or packages are not part of math mode.
Is the SVG a true vector file?
The SVG keeps the equation sharp at any zoom in web browsers, but it is built from the typeset HTML with embedded fonts, so some design programs and Office apps do not display it. For Word, PowerPoint and Docs use the PNG or MathML options.
Why does my formula show an error?
Usually a brace is missing or a command is misspelled, for example \frac needs two groups like \frac{a}{b}, and every \left( needs a matching \right). The red message names the problem and the preview still shows the part that could be read.
Is my equation uploaded anywhere?
No. Typesetting and image export happen in your browser. Your last formula and settings are remembered only in this browser's local storage.
