Starter recipes for the first discoveries
Every item comes from mixing exactly two things. These first combinations use only the four basic elements and the items they create, so they are a good way to grow your collection quickly. After that, try mixing each new item with everything you already have.

Where the four elements come from
The idea that everything is made of earth, water, air and fire goes back to the Greek thinker Empedocles in the 5th century BC, and it shaped science for almost two thousand years. Today we know that matter is made of atoms of about 118 chemical elements, and that "fire" is a chemical reaction rather than a substance. The game keeps the old four elements because they are easy to imagine and lead to fun, logical combinations, and you can even discover the Atom along the way.
Tips for finding everything
Mix new items with the basics first. Water, Fire, Earth and Air combine with a surprising number of things.
Try an item with itself. Two of the same thing often makes something bigger: Tree + Tree is a Forest, House + House is a Village.
Think about how things are made in real life. Wheat + Stone grinds into Flour, Flour + Water becomes Dough, and Dough + Fire bakes Bread.
Use the Ready to make tab in the discovery book. It counts how many new items you can create with what you already have, without telling you the recipe.
Humans unlock a lot. Once you have a Human (Life + Clay), combine it with tools, animals and places to discover jobs and inventions.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make Life in the element mixing game?
Life needs energy in a watery place. Mix Fire and Air to get Energy, Mud and Water to get Swamp (Mud is Water plus Earth), then combine Energy with Swamp. Lightning mixed with Sea or Ocean also creates Life.
How many items are there to discover?
There are 410 items in total: the four basic elements plus 406 things to discover. Many of them can be made in two different ways, so there are more than 800 working combinations.
Do I need to be online to play?
No. All recipes are built into the page, so once it has loaded the game works without an internet connection. Your progress is stored in this browser's local storage and nothing is sent to a server.
What happens if two elements don't combine?
The items shake and nothing is used up. Basic elements never run out and items in your collection can be placed on the board as many times as you like, so feel free to experiment.
How do hints work?
Each hint picks an item you can already make with things you have found. The first press names one ingredient, the second press names both. Hints are counted in your discovery book, but there is no penalty for using them.
Can I see all the recipes?
Yes. In the discovery book, tick Show all recipes (spoilers) to reveal every item and how to make it. You can also download the list as a text file to print or share.
Is this game suitable for kids?
Yes. All items are family friendly: nature, weather, animals, food, buildings, vehicles, music and friendly fantasy creatures. It is a fun way to practise logical thinking and learn how things are made.
