Tips for mastering the US map
- Anchor on the big shapes. Texas, California, Florida and Michigan's mitten are easy landmarks; place their neighbours relative to them.
- Learn the square states as a block. Colorado and Wyoming are both rectangles; Wyoming sits directly north of Colorado, with Utah to their west.
- Stack the Dakotas and the plains. From north to south: North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas.
- Use a mnemonic for New England. Going north from Connecticut and Rhode Island: Massachusetts, then Vermont (west) and New Hampshire (east), then Maine at the top.
- Remember the four corners. Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico meet at a single point, the only place in the US where four states touch.
Frequently asked questions
How does scoring work in the US states quiz?
In Find the state and State capitals, accuracy is the share of states you got right on the first try. You get three tries per state on the map; second and third tries are marked yellow and orange, and a state you miss three times is shown in red.
Which states are in each region?
The regions follow the US Census Bureau. Northeast: CT, ME, MA, NH, RI, VT, NJ, NY, PA. Midwest: IL, IN, MI, OH, WI, IA, KS, MN, MO, NE, ND, SD. South: DE, FL, GA, MD, NC, SC, VA, WV, AL, KY, MS, TN, AR, LA, OK, TX. West: AZ, CO, ID, MT, NV, NM, UT, WY, AK, CA, HI, OR, WA.
How do I click small states like Rhode Island or Delaware?
Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland each have a small box to the right of the map that counts as clicking the state. You can also zoom in with the + button and drag the map, or switch to the tile-grid map where every state is the same size.
Is Washington, D.C. part of the quiz?
No. The District of Columbia is drawn on the map but it is not a state, so it is never asked. Its capital-city status is why it is not counted among the 50 states.
Which state capitals are hardest?
The most missed capitals are those that are not the largest city in their state, such as Sacramento (California), Albany (New York), Tallahassee (Florida), Harrisburg (Pennsylvania), Springfield (Illinois), Frankfort (Kentucky), Pierre (South Dakota) and Olympia (Washington).
What is the fastest way to learn all 50 states?
Start with one region in Learn mode, then play Find the state for that region until you are above 90% accuracy. Move on region by region, and finish with Type all 50 to test pure recall. Short daily rounds work better than one long session.
Is my score saved?
Your best accuracy and time for each mode and region are saved in your browser's local storage. Nothing is uploaded and no account is needed.
