How to use the Word Guess Game
- Type a five-letter word with your keyboard or the on-screen keys and press Enter.
- Read the colours: green means the letter is in the right spot, yellow means it is in the word but in a different spot, grey means it is not in the word.
- Use the clues for your next guess. The keyboard also colours each letter you have tried.
- Solve it within six guesses to win and grow your streak. Turn on Hard mode before your first guess for an extra challenge.
- Press Copy result to share your emoji grid, then Play again for a new word.
How the colour clues work
| Colour | Meaning | Example (answer CRANE, guess TRACE) |
|---|---|---|
| Green | Right letter in the right position | R, A and E are green |
| Yellow | The letter is in the word, but somewhere else | C is yellow: CRANE has C first, not fourth |
| Grey | The letter is not in the word (or all copies are already accounted for) | T is grey |
Repeated letters: worked examples
Double letters are where many games and players go wrong. Exact matches are always scored first, then the remaining copies of each letter in the answer are handed out from left to right.
| Answer | Guess | Result | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| ABIDE | SPEED | ⬜⬜🟨⬜🟨 | Only one E in the answer, so only the first E gets a yellow. |
| THERE | EERIE | 🟨⬜🟨⬜🟩 | The last E is green, which uses one E; the first E takes the other one; the second E is grey. |
| HELLO | LLAMA | 🟨🟨⬜⬜⬜ | HELLO has two Ls, both in other positions, so both Ls are yellow. |
| RADAR | ARRAY | 🟨🟨🟨🟩⬜ | The A in position 4 is exact. The remaining A, both Rs and no Y are then matched. |
Strategy tips
- Open with common letters. E, A, R, O, T, L, I, S and N appear in a large share of five-letter words.
- Use a second word to cover new letters if your first guess gave few hits, even in normal mode.
- Remember repeats. Words like GEESE, LLAMA and ARRAY catch many players out.
- Watch common endings such as -ER, -LY, -CH and -SH, and Y at the end of a word.
- In hard mode, slow down: think through which positions are still open before you commit.
Frequently asked questions
Is this like Wordle unlimited?
Yes. It is an independent Wordle-style game with the same basic idea: six tries to find a five-letter word with colour clues. The difference is that you can play as many words as you like, whenever you like, and your stats are kept in your browser.
How are repeated letters coloured?
Exact matches are marked first. Remaining letters are then marked yellow only as many times as that letter still appears in the answer. For example, if the answer is ABIDE and you guess SPEED, the first E is yellow and the second E is grey, because the answer contains only one E.
What is hard mode?
In hard mode every revealed hint must be used in later guesses. Green letters must stay in the same position and yellow letters must appear somewhere in your next guess. Hard mode can only be switched on or off before the first guess of a game, and shared results show an asterisk.
Why was my word not accepted?
Guesses must be real English words of exactly five letters from the game's dictionary of over 6,000 words. Proper nouns, abbreviations and some rare words are not accepted. Plurals and past tenses of common words usually are.
What does high contrast mode do?
It swaps green and yellow for orange and blue, which are easier to tell apart for people with red-green colour blindness. Your shared emoji grid uses the matching colours.
Are my stats saved?
Your played games, win percentage, streaks and guess distribution are saved in your browser's local storage on this device. They are not uploaded anywhere. Clearing your browser data or pressing Reset statistics removes them.
What are good starting words?
Words with common, different letters work well, such as CRANE, SLATE, TRACE, STARE or ROAST. They test frequent letters like S, T, R, A and E in one go.
