How to use the Flappy Game
- Choose a difficulty: Easy has wide gaps and a slower pace, Hard has narrow gaps and stronger gravity.
- Press Start game, tap the board or hit Space to take off.
- Flap to stay up: every tap gives the chick a short hop, and gravity pulls it back down between taps.
- Fly through the gaps between the bamboo stalks. Each gap you clear is one point.
- Avoid the stalks and the ground. Press P or Esc to pause, then try again to beat your best and earn a medal.
Difficulty settings compared
The game world is 360 × 480 units and is scaled to fit your screen, so the numbers below are the same on a phone and on a large monitor.
| Setting | Easy | Normal | Hard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gap between stalks | 158 units (12 × the chick) | 132 units | 112 units |
| Starting scroll speed | 120 units/s | 145 units/s | 175 units/s |
| Distance between stalks | 210 units | 195 units | 180 units |
| Gravity | 1,150 units/s² | 1,300 units/s² | 1,420 units/s² |
| Hop height per flap | ≈ 56 units | ≈ 56 units | ≈ 55 units |
The hop height comes from the physics formula h = v² ÷ (2g): on Normal a flap sets the upward speed to 380 units/s, so the chick rises 380² ÷ (2 × 1,300) ≈ 56 units before it starts to fall. After every point the scrolling speed rises by 1.2 units/s, up to a maximum of +60.
Tips for a higher score
- Tap in a steady rhythm. Small, regular taps are easier to control than big panicked bursts.
- Aim for the lower half of the gap. One flap lifts you about a third of the gap on Normal, so a low position leaves room to hop.
- Look one stalk ahead. If the next gap is much higher, start climbing as soon as you clear the current one.
- Don't fight the fall. Let the chick drop toward a low gap and flap only at the last moment.
- Pause when you need a break. Press P or Esc and the chick waits in mid-air for you.
Medals and what they take
| Medal | Points in one game | Roughly how long you survive (Normal) |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze | 10 | about 15 seconds |
| Silver | 25 | about 32 seconds |
| Gold | 50 | about 1 minute |
| Platinum | 100 | about 1 minute 50 seconds |
Times are estimates: a new stalk arrives every 195 units, which is about 1.3 seconds at the starting speed and gets a little quicker as the speed increases.
Frequently asked questions
How do you play the flappy game?
Each tap, click or press of Space makes the chick hop upward, and gravity pulls it down again. Time your taps so the chick passes through the gap between the upper and lower bamboo stalks. You score one point per gap and the game ends if you touch a stalk or the ground.
What are the controls?
Space, the up arrow, W, a left mouse click or a tap on the board all flap. P or Esc pauses and resumes, and Enter starts a new game when the board has focus. The game also pauses by itself if you switch tabs or windows.
What changes between Easy, Normal and Hard?
Easy has a 158-unit gap, slower scrolling and lighter gravity. Normal uses a 132-unit gap, and Hard narrows it to 112 units with faster scrolling and stronger gravity. The pace also creeps up a little as your score rises. Each difficulty keeps its own best score.
How do medals work?
You earn bronze at 10 points, silver at 25, gold at 50 and platinum at 100 in a single game. The medal for your best score is listed in the records table under the board.
Is this the original Flappy Bird?
No. This is an original one-button game with its own chick character, bamboo obstacles and artwork, all drawn in code. It shares the simple tap-to-flap idea that many arcade games use.
Are my scores saved?
Yes. Your best score, last score and number of games for each difficulty are stored in your browser's local storage on this device. Nothing is uploaded, and clearing your browser data or using a private window resets them.
