Strategies for naming every country
Go continent by continent. Mentally trace the map: West Africa along the coast from Mauritania to Nigeria, then inland; Europe from Portugal eastward, row by row.
Follow borders. When you name a country, name all of its neighbours before moving on. The map shows the gaps.
Use the alphabet. When you are stuck, run through the letters: A (Andorra, Angola, Antigua…), B, C, and so on.
Remember the "groups". The -stans (Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan), the Guineas (Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Papua New Guinea) and the Saints (Kitts and Nevis, Lucia, Vincent and the Grenadines).
Save the islands for last. The Caribbean, the Indian Ocean (Seychelles, Mauritius, Comoros, Maldives) and the Pacific hide over 25 countries.
Countries vs. territories
Places such as Greenland (Denmark), Puerto Rico (United States), New Caledonia (France), Western Sahara (disputed) and Hong Kong are not counted as separate countries in this quiz, so typing them gives no point. Greenland appears on the map in a lighter grey for that reason. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are parts of the United Kingdom; typing England counts as the United Kingdom.
Frequently asked questions
Why 197 countries?
The quiz uses the 193 member states of the United Nations plus four widely listed states that are not UN members: Vatican City and Palestine (UN observer states), Kosovo and Taiwan. This is the same 197 used by many popular geography quizzes.
Which spellings are accepted?
The usual English short name and common alternatives, for example USA, America, UK, Great Britain, Holland, Burma, Ivory Coast, Swaziland, Cape Verde, East Timor, Czech Republic and Macedonia. Accents, capital letters, punctuation and 'St.' or 'Saint' do not matter.
How do I enter Congo, Niger or Guinea?
Type 'Congo' or 'Republic of the Congo' for Congo-Brazzaville and 'DR Congo', 'DRC' or 'Democratic Republic of the Congo' for Congo-Kinshasa. When a name such as Niger, Guinea or Dominica is the start of another country (Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau, Dominican Republic), it is accepted and left in the box so you can keep typing.
Which continents are the countries in?
Africa 54, Asia 48, Europe 46, North America 23 (including Central America and the Caribbean), South America 12 and Oceania 14. Russia and Cyprus are counted in Europe; Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan in Asia.
Why are some countries shown as dots?
Small countries such as Vatican City, Monaco, Singapore, Malta and most island nations are too small to see on a world map, so they are drawn as dots at their location. The dot turns green when you name the country.
Is my best score saved?
Your best score for each time limit is stored in your browser's local storage on this device only. Nothing is uploaded.
What is a good score?
Naming 100 countries in 15 minutes is a solid result for most people; geography enthusiasts often get 170 or more. The hardest are usually small island nations in Oceania and the Caribbean and some Central Asian and African countries.
