How to use the Remove Words from Text
Paste your text into the left box or open a .txt file.
List the words or phrases to remove, one per line (commas also work), or add a ready-made list of filler, hedging or stop words.
Choose the options: whole words only, case-sensitive, tidy spaces and punctuation, drop lines that end up empty.
Check the result in Clean text, or open Show removals to see each deleted word struck through. The table lists how often each term was removed.
Copy or download the clean text, or press Use as input to remove another set of words.

Only lines where something was removed are tidied, so the rest of your formatting, including indentation and line breaks, stays exactly as it was.
Tips
Editing your own writing: add the Filler words list, then open Show removals and restore any word that was doing real work, for example just meaning "only recently".
Preparing keywords: combine the Stop words list with One Word Per Line or the Word Frequency Counter to see which content words dominate a text.
Redacting names: list each name and its variants (first name, full name, nickname). Turn on Case-sensitive if a name is also an ordinary word, such as Rose or Bill.
Need a replacement instead of a deletion? Use Find and Replace Text, which supports regular expressions.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove specific words from a text?
Paste the text, then type the words you want to delete in the Words or phrases box, one per line. The clean version appears immediately in the Clean text box, and the table on the right shows how many times each word was removed. Press Copy text to use it elsewhere.
Will removing a short word break longer words?
Not with Whole words only turned on, which is the default. A term only matches when it is not directly attached to other letters, digits or underscores, so removing art leaves start, party and artist untouched. Turn the option off if you deliberately want to cut a string out of the middle of words.
Is the removal case-sensitive?
No, by default The, the and THE are all removed when you list the. Tick Case-sensitive to remove only the exact capitalization you typed, for example to delete the acronym IT without touching the word it.
What does Tidy spaces & punctuation do?
When a word disappears it often leaves two spaces, a space before a comma, a doubled comma or a comma at the start of a sentence. Tidying fixes those on the lines that changed, removes brackets left empty, and capitalizes the next word when a capitalized word at the start of a sentence was removed. Untick it to delete only the exact characters that matched.
Can I remove phrases as well as single words?
Yes. Enter a phrase such as kind of or in my opinion on its own line. Phrases match across any amount of spacing or a line break between their words, and longer phrases are tried before shorter terms so they are removed as a whole.
What are stop words and filler words?
Stop words are very common function words such as the, and, of and is that search engines and text-analysis tools often ignore. Filler words such as basically, really and just add little meaning in writing. Removing stop words is useful for keyword lists and analysis; removing fillers tightens prose, but read the result because some uses are meaningful.
Does it change apostrophes or other characters?
No. Only the matched words are removed, plus the spacing clean-up if Tidy is on. Straight and curly apostrophes are treated the same when matching, so don't also removes don’t.
