Tips for well-formatted Discord messages
Announcements: start with a # header, add a -# subtext line for the date or author, then use a short bulleted list for the details.
Spoilers for plot twists and answers: wrap only the revealing part, not the whole sentence, so people know what they are about to reveal.
Code help: always paste code in a code block with the language name; it keeps indentation and makes it far easier to read.
Colored text: Discord has no color markdown, but diff code blocks show lines starting with + in green and - in red. For more colors, use the Discord Colored Text Generator.
Formatting does not show? Check for spaces just inside the symbols (** bold** fails for some styles) and make sure headers, quotes and lists start at the very beginning of a line.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make text bold in Discord?
Put two asterisks on each side: **like this**. Select the words here and click B (or press Ctrl+B) and the asterisks are added for you. Use one asterisk for italic, two underscores for underline and two tildes for strikethrough.
How do I make a spoiler in Discord?
Wrap the text in two vertical bars on each side: ||secret||. Readers see a dark bar until they click it. In the preview here, click the spoiler to reveal it, just like in Discord.
How do headers and subtext work?
Start a line with #, ## or ### and a space for a large, medium or small header. Start a line with -# and a space for small grey subtext. These only work at the very beginning of a line, and the space after the symbols is required.
What is the difference between > and >>>?
A line starting with > and a space is a single-line quote. >>> followed by a space turns everything after it, to the end of the message, into one block quote, which is handy for long quotes.
How do I make a code block with colors?
Put three backticks on their own line, followed by a language name such as js, py, css or diff, then your code, then three backticks on a closing line. Discord colors the code for that language. Pick the language here before clicking the code block button.
How long can a Discord message be?
Regular messages can be up to 2,000 characters; Nitro subscribers can send up to 4,000. Markdown symbols such as ** count toward the limit. The counter turns orange near the limit and red when you are over.
How do I show asterisks or underscores without formatting?
Put a backslash before the symbol, like \*not italic\*. The Escape button adds backslashes to the selected text (or the whole message) so every symbol appears exactly as typed.
