Text copied out of a PDF arrives with a line break at the end of every printed line, words split by hyphens, odd ligature characters and stray page numbers and running headers. Paste it here to get clean, flowing paragraphs you can edit, quote or translate.

How to use the PDF Text Cleaner
Copy text from your PDF (Ctrl+A or drag-select, then Ctrl+C) and paste it into the left box.
Keep the default fixes or untick any you do not want, such as header removal for a one-page document.
Choose paragraph detection: Smart works for most documents; Blank lines only is safer for poetry, code or tables.
Review the clean text and the list of removed header and footer lines on the right.
Copy or download the cleaned text.

GREEN CITIES REVIEW – SPRING ISSUE (on every page)
Two-column layouts: select one column at a time. Selecting across both columns makes many readers interleave lines from the left and right columns, which no cleaner can fully untangle.
Tables and code: switch paragraph detection to Blank lines only, or untick Join hard-wrapped lines, so rows and code lines are not merged.
Footnotes: footnote text usually lands at the bottom of each page's text. Remove it by hand, or tick Remove citation marks to drop bracketed reference numbers such as [12] from the main text.
Whole documents: to extract every page at once, use PDF to Text first, then paste the result here.
Why PDF text behaves this way
PDF was designed to reproduce a printed page exactly. Inside the file, text is a series of glyphs placed at coordinates, with no record of where paragraphs start or which hyphens were added by the typesetter. Copy and paste therefore recreates lines from positions and guesses at spaces. That is also why ligatures, soft hyphens and headers that repeat on each page end up in your clipboard. Cleaning reverses the most common of these effects with rules that look at line lengths, punctuation and repetition.
Frequently asked questions
Why does text copied from a PDF have line breaks everywhere?
A PDF stores text as positioned lines on a page, not as flowing paragraphs. When you copy it, most PDF readers add a line break at the end of each printed line, so the text keeps the page's column width. This tool joins those lines back together and only keeps breaks where a paragraph really ends.
How does it know where a paragraph ends?
Blank lines always end a paragraph. In Smart mode, a line that ends with a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or colon and is clearly shorter than a typical line is also treated as the last line of a paragraph, because printed paragraphs usually end before the right margin. Short headings and bullet or numbered list items are kept on their own lines.
Will it break real hyphenated words?
A hyphen at the end of a line is removed only when the next line starts with a lowercase letter, which is how word-division hyphens appear (com- mon becomes common). Compounds starting with self, well, half and cross keep their hyphen, and hyphens between numbers such as 1990-1995 stay. Check unusual compounds, since a PDF cannot tell the two kinds of hyphen apart.
What are ligatures and why do they appear?
Ligatures are single characters that combine letters, such as fi, fl and ff. Typesetting software uses them to look better in print, but when copied they can show up as one odd character or break search and spell-check. The tool replaces them with the normal letters fi, fl, ff, ffi and ffl.
How are headers and footers detected?
Running headers and footers repeat on every page, often with a changing page number. The tool looks for short lines that appear at least three times (you can change the threshold), treating digits as equal, and removes them. The removed lines are listed so you can check that nothing important was dropped.
Does this work with scanned PDFs?
Only if the PDF already contains selectable text. If you cannot select words in your PDF reader, the pages are images; run them through an OCR tool such as Image to Text first, then clean the result here.
Is my text uploaded?
No. All cleaning happens in your browser with JavaScript. The text is not sent anywhere or stored; only your option settings are remembered on your device.
