Ways to use a one-word-per-line list
- Spreadsheets: paste the list into Excel or Google Sheets and each word fills its own row, ready for COUNTIF, pivot tables or lookups.
- Vocabulary and spelling lists: lowercase, remove duplicates and sort A to Z to turn a reading passage into a study list.
- Keyword and tag files: many SEO, ad and moderation tools import one term per line.

Frequently asked questions
How do I put each word on a new line?
Paste your text into the box. The tool finds every word and writes it on its own line in the Word list box, in the original order. Press Copy list to paste it into a spreadsheet column, a code editor or any app that expects one item per line.
What counts as a word?
With Strip punctuation on, a word is a run of letters and digits. Apostrophes inside a word (don't, it's) and hyphens between parts (well-known) can be kept so those stay one word; numbers with a decimal point, thousands separator or colon (3.5, 1,000, 7:45) also stay together. Everything else, such as commas, quotes and brackets, separates words. With the option off, the text is split only at spaces, tabs and line breaks and punctuation stays attached.
Can it remove duplicate words?
Yes. Tick Remove duplicate words to keep only the first occurrence of each word. By default the comparison ignores case, so The and the count as the same word; untick Ignore case to treat them as different. The Left out box shows how many duplicates were dropped.
Does it work with other languages?
Yes. Letters from any alphabet are recognized, including accented Latin letters, Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic and Hebrew. Languages written without spaces between words, such as Chinese, Japanese or Thai, are not split into individual words because that needs a dictionary.
How is the frequency order calculated?
Each word is counted every time it appears (using the same case rule as the duplicate setting). Most frequent first lists the words with the highest count at the top; words with equal counts stay in the order they first appear in your text.
How do I turn the list back into a comma separated line?
Copy the list and paste it into the Comma Separator tool, which joins lines with commas, semicolons or any other separator. To turn words into separate lines again later, this page works the other way round.
Is there a limit on text length?
There is no fixed limit. Whole books of several hundred thousand words are processed in a moment in modern browsers, and nothing is sent to a server.
