Euchre in 30 seconds
Deck: 24 cards, 9 through Ace. You and North are partners against West and East. Five cards each.
Making trump: a card is turned up. Players in turn may order it up (that suit becomes trump and the dealer takes the card) or pass. If all pass, each may name any other suit.
Bowers: the Jack of trump (right bower) is the highest card. The other Jack of the same color (left bower) is second highest and counts as a trump.
Play: follow the suit led if you can (the left bower belongs to the trump suit). Highest trump wins, otherwise the highest card of the led suit.
Scoring: makers taking 3 or 4 tricks score 1, all 5 (a march) score 2, or 4 when going alone. If the makers take fewer than 3 they are euchred and the defenders score 2.

How to use the Euchre
Look at the turned-up card. After the deal, one card is turned face up. Its suit is offered as trump.
Order up or pass. When it's your turn, press Order up (Pick it up if you're the dealer) to make that suit trump, or Pass. Tick Go alone if your hand is strong enough to win without your partner.
Second round. If all four players pass, the card is turned down and each player may name any other suit as trump, or pass again.
Play the tricks. Follow the led suit if you can. The Jack of trump (right bower) is highest and the other Jack of the same color (left bower) is second highest and counts as trump.
Score points. The makers need 3 of the 5 tricks: 1 point for 3 or 4 tricks, 2 for all five, 4 for all five alone. If they fail, the defenders score 2. First team to 10 wins.

Euchre strategy tips
Count your trumps. Three trumps, including a bower, plus an off-suit ace is usually enough to order up.
Think about who gets the card. Ordering up gives the turned card to the dealer. That helps you when your partner deals and helps the opponents when one of them does.
Lead trump when you made it. Pulling the opponents' trumps protects your aces later in the hand.
Don't trump your partner's winner. If North is already winning the trick, play low.
Remember the left bower. When hearts are trump, the Jack of diamonds is a heart. Players often forget and lose track of it.
Next is a classic call. In round two, the suit of the same color as the turned-down card ("next") is often a good choice for the player left of the dealer.
Frequently asked questions
How do you play Euchre?
Euchre is a trick-taking game for four players in two partnerships, played with 24 cards: the 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace of each suit. Each player gets five cards and one card is turned up. Players decide in turn whether that suit becomes trump; the team that chooses trump (the makers) must win at least three of the five tricks. Players must follow the suit led, and the highest trump, or the highest card of the led suit, wins each trick.
What are the right and left bowers in Euchre?
The right bower is the Jack of the trump suit and is the highest card in the game. The left bower is the other Jack of the same color, for example the Jack of diamonds when hearts are trump. It is the second-highest card and is treated as a trump, not as a card of its printed suit, so it must be played to follow a trump lead.
How is Euchre scored?
If the makers win 3 or 4 tricks they score 1 point. Winning all 5 tricks, called a march, scores 2 points. A player who goes alone and wins all 5 tricks scores 4 points, while 3 or 4 tricks alone still scores 1. If the makers win fewer than 3 tricks they are euchred and the other team scores 2 points. The first team to 10 points wins.
What does ordering up mean in Euchre?
In the first round of bidding, any player can order up the turned card. Its suit becomes trump, the dealer adds the card to their hand and discards one card face down. If the dealer accepts it themselves, it's called picking it up.
When should you go alone in Euchre?
Going alone means your partner puts their cards down and you play against both opponents by yourself. It's worth it when you expect to win all five tricks, for example with both bowers and two or three other high trumps, or with several trumps and off-suit aces. A successful lone march scores 4 points instead of 2.
What is Stick the Dealer?
Stick the Dealer is a popular rule for when all four players pass in both rounds. Instead of throwing the hand in and redealing, the dealer must name a trump suit. It's off by default here; turn it on in the options.
Who leads first in Euchre?
The player to the dealer's left leads the first trick. If that player's partner is going alone and they are sitting out, the next player leads. After that, whoever wins a trick leads the next one. The deal moves one seat to the left after each hand.
