How to use the FreeCell
Start a game: press New game for a random classic deal, or type a deal number and press Play deal.
Move cards by dragging them, or click a card to send it to the best place: a foundation, another column, a free cell or an empty column.
Build the columns down in alternating colors, such as a red 9 on a black 10. Any card can go into a free cell or an empty column.
Move runs: you can move an ordered run of cards at once if there are enough free cells and empty columns to do it one card at a time.
Build each foundation from Ace to King in one suit. Use Hint (H) when stuck and Undo (Ctrl+Z) to try another plan.
FreeCell layout and rules
Area
What goes there
Tableau (8 columns)
All 52 cards are dealt face up: 7 cards in the first four columns and 6 in the last four. Build down in alternating colors, for example a black 8 on a red 9. An empty column can take any card or run.
Free cells (4, top left)
Each cell holds one card of any kind. Use them as temporary parking spaces.
Foundations (4, top right)
One pile per suit, built up from Ace to King. The game is won when all 52 cards are here.
How many cards can you move at once?
Officially you move one card at a time, but moving a run of ordered cards is allowed whenever it could be done with single moves through the free spaces. The limit is:
Max run = (free cells + 1) × 2empty columns
Empty free cells
0 empty columns
1 empty column

When the destination is itself an empty column, it does not count as one of the empty columns in the formula.
FreeCell strategy tips
Free the Aces and 2s early. Look for low cards buried in the columns and plan how to dig them out first.
Keep free cells empty. Every free cell you fill halves your flexibility. Only park a card if you can see how to use it again soon.
An empty column is worth more than a free cell. It doubles the size of the runs you can move, so try to clear a short column early.
Think before moving a run into an empty column. It often uses up the column for little gain. Moving a single key card there can be better.
Use undo and replay deals. Every deal number gives the same layout, so you can come back to a hard deal (try #1, #617 or the famous unsolvable #11982) and try a new plan.
Keyboard: Tab to a card and press Enter to move it, H for a hint, Ctrl + Z to undo. You can also link straight to a deal with ?deal=1234 at the end of the address.
Frequently asked questions
What are the rules of FreeCell?
All 52 cards are dealt face up into eight columns. You may move the top card of a column to one of four free cells (each holds one card), to a foundation, or onto another column if it is one rank lower and the opposite color. Empty columns can take any card. You win when all four foundations are built up from Ace to King by suit.
Are these the same deals as Windows FreeCell?
Yes. Deals 1 to 32000 are generated with the same numbering method as the original Microsoft FreeCell, so deal #1 here has the same layout as game #1 there. You can also play deals up to 1,000,000 with the same formula.
Is every FreeCell game winnable?
Almost. Of the original 32,000 deals, only #11982 has been shown by computer search to be unsolvable. Most deals can be won with careful play, which is why FreeCell is called a game of skill rather than luck.
How many cards can I move at once?
You can move a run of up to (free cells + 1) × 2^(empty columns) cards, because the move could be done one card at a time using the spaces. With 4 free cells and no empty columns that is 5 cards. If you move the run into an empty column, that column does not count.
What does auto-move to foundations do?
When it is on, cards that are safe to play are moved to the foundations for you: Aces and 2s always, and other cards once both opposite-color foundations are high enough that no card would ever need to be placed on them. Turn it off in the options if you prefer to do it yourself.
Do undo and hints affect my result?
No. You can undo as often as you like, and the hint simply shows a possible move. Your win counter, streak and best time are saved in your browser only.
