How to use the Yacht Dice Game
- Pick a mode. Choose Solo to chase a high score or 2 players and enter both names.
- Roll the dice. Press Roll dice. You get up to three rolls each turn.
- Hold the keepers. Click a die (or press 1-5) to hold it so it stays put on the next roll.
- Score a category. Click a highlighted cell on the score sheet. The grey number shows what you would get. Each category can be used once.
- Finish 13 rounds. When every box is filled the game totals the scores, adds bonuses and saves solo high scores.
Yacht scoring categories
Every category can be used once per game, so a full game is exactly 13 turns. If your dice do not fit the category you choose, it scores 0.
| Category | Requirement | Score | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ones to Sixes | None | Sum of dice showing that number | 3-3-3-5-1 in Threes = 9 |
| Upper bonus | Ones to Sixes total 63 or more | 35 | Three of each number = 63 |
| Three of a kind | At least three dice the same | Total of all five dice | 4-4-4-2-6 = 20 |
| Four of a kind | At least four dice the same | Total of all five dice | 6-6-6-6-1 = 25 |
| Full house | Three of one number and two of another | 25 | 2-2-5-5-5 |
| Small straight | Four numbers in a row | 30 | 1-2-3-4-6 |
| Large straight | Five numbers in a row | 40 | 2-3-4-5-6 |
| Yacht | All five dice the same | 50 | 5-5-5-5-5 |
| Chance | None | Total of all five dice | 1-3-4-6-6 = 20 |
| Yacht bonus | Another Yacht after scoring 50 in Yacht | +100 each | Plus joker placement |
Odds and strategy tips
With three rolls and smart holding, a Yacht is much more likely than the 1 in 1,296 chance of rolling five of a kind in a single throw. If you always keep your most common number, the chance of finishing a turn with a Yacht is about 4.6%, roughly once every 22 turns.
- Chase the upper bonus. 35 points is worth more than a Full house. Three Fives or Sixes give you room to fall short on Ones or Twos.
- Keep Chance as a safety net. Use it late in the game for a bad roll with a high total instead of wasting a valuable box.
- Go for straights early. Holding 3-4-5 gives many ways to finish a Small straight; open-ended runs are better than runs with a gap.
- Dump zeros wisely. If you must take a 0, put it in Ones or Yacht late in the game, where you lose the fewest expected points.
- Use the grey preview. The orange number on the score sheet marks the highest score available right now, but the best choice also depends on which boxes are still open.
Joker rules for extra Yachts
When you roll a Yacht and your Yacht box is already filled, the roll becomes a joker. You score 100 bonus points if the Yacht box holds 50. You must place the roll in the matching upper box (for example Fours for 4-4-4-4-4) if it is open. If that box is taken, you may use any open lower box, and Full house, Small straight and Large straight score their full 25, 30 and 40. If all lower boxes are filled too, you enter 0 in any open upper box.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Yacht dice game?
Yacht is a classic dice game played with five dice and a score sheet of categories. Each turn you roll up to three times, keeping any dice you want between rolls, then score the result in one unused category. After 13 rounds the highest total wins. Commercial games such as Yahtzee are based on it.
How does the upper section bonus work?
The upper section has Ones through Sixes, scored as the sum of the matching dice. If those six boxes add up to 63 or more you get a 35 point bonus. 63 is what you get with three of each number, so aim for three or more of a kind in each box.
How many points is each lower category worth?
Three of a kind and Four of a kind score the total of all five dice. Full house scores 25, Small straight (four in a row) 30, Large straight (five in a row) 40, Yacht (all five the same) 50, and Chance scores the total of the dice with no requirement.
What happens if I roll a second Yacht?
If your Yacht box already holds 50 you get a 100 point Yacht bonus. You must then score the roll in the matching upper box if it is open. If it is filled, you can use the roll as a joker in any lower box for full value, for example 40 for a Large straight. If you scored 0 in Yacht earlier you still use the joker rules but get no bonus.
What is the highest possible score?
With the bonus rules used here, the theoretical maximum is 1575: every box filled perfectly plus twelve Yacht bonuses. In practice most casual games end between 150 and 250 points, and a computer playing the mathematically optimal strategy averages about 254.
Do I have to score something every turn?
Yes. After your last roll you must pick an open category, even if it scores 0. Filling a hard box such as Yacht or Ones with a zero is often the best choice late in the game.
Are my high scores saved?
Solo high scores and your average are saved in your browser's local storage on this device only. Nothing is uploaded. Clearing your browser data removes them.
