About the Japanese keyboard
Japanese uses three scripts together: hiragana for grammar and native words, katakana for foreign words and emphasis, and kanji for word stems. This keyboard types the two kana syllabaries, 46 basic characters each, plus voiced and small forms.
Kana (JIS): The JIS kana layout printed on Japanese keyboards: each key types one kana. ゛ and ゜ add dakuten/handakuten to the previous kana (か + ゛ → が).
Romaji → Hiragana: Type romaji and get hiragana: konnichiha → こんにちは, arigatou → ありがとう. nn gives ん, double consonants give っ.
Romaji → Katakana: Type romaji and get katakana: konpyu-ta- → コンピューター. Use - for the long vowel mark ー.

Frequently asked questions
How do I type hiragana with an English keyboard?
Choose Romaji → Hiragana and type the reading: arigatou → ありがとう, sushi → すし, toukyou → とうきょう. Each word converts as you type.

nn or n' gives ん (n before a consonant also works: konban → こんばん). Double a consonant for っ: kitte → きって. Prefix x or l for small kana: xa → ぁ, xtsu → っ.

Type a hyphen: ko-hi- → コーヒー, ra-men → ラーメン.
