How to use the Kazakh Keyboard
- Choose a typing mode: Kazakh, Phonetic (Latin).
- Type with your keyboard (keep “Type with my physical keyboard” ticked) or click the on-screen keys. Each key shows the Kazakh character it types.
- Hold Shift or press the on-screen ⇧ key for the second character on each key.
- Use the quick characters below the keyboard for marks and symbols that are not on the main layout.
- Copy the text and paste it anywhere, download it as a .txt file, or search Google for it directly.
About the Kazakh keyboard
Kazakh Cyrillic has 42 letters: the 33 Russian letters plus ә, і, ң, ғ, ү, ұ, қ, ө and һ, which represent sounds Russian does not have.
- Kazakh: The Kazakh Cyrillic layout: Russian ЙЦУКЕН letters plus ә і ң ғ ү ұ қ ө һ on the number row.
- Phonetic (Latin): Type Kazakh in Latin letters: salem → сәлем needs a' for ә. Use q қ, g' ғ, n' ң, o' ө, u' ұ, y' ү, i' і.

Tips for typing Kazakh
- Vowel harmony: words usually use either front (ә е і ө ү) or back (а о ұ ы) vowels.
- қ and ғ appear with back vowels, к and г with front ones.
- ₸ is the tenge sign.
- Use « » for quotations.
Frequently asked questions
Where are the Kazakh letters on the keyboard?
On the Kazakh layout the number row types ә і ң ғ ү ұ қ ө һ (keys 2 to =); hold Shift for capitals. Digits are on Shift of the same keys on many Kazakh keyboards; here they keep their Russian-style punctuation.
What is the difference between ү and ұ?
Both are u-like vowels: ү is a front vowel (like German ü) and ұ is a back vowel (like u in "put").
Is Kazakh switching to Latin?
Kazakhstan plans a transition to a Latin alphabet; Cyrillic is still the main script in daily use.
How do I type қ in phonetic mode?
Type q. For ғ type g' or gh, and for ң type n' or ng.
