How to use the Malayalam Keyboard
Choose a typing mode: InScript, Phonetic typing.
Type with your keyboard (keep “Type with my physical keyboard” ticked) or click the on-screen keys. Each key shows the Malayalam character it types.
Hold Shift or press the on-screen ⇧ key for the second character on each key.
Use the quick characters below the keyboard for marks and symbols that are not on the main layout.
Copy the text and paste it anywhere, download it as a .txt file, or search Google for it directly.
About the Malayalam keyboard
Malayalam uses its own script with many conjuncts and special chillu letters, which are pure consonants without a vowel, such as ൻ (n) and ർ (r).
InScript: InScript Malayalam layout (Government of India standard, the same key positions as Hindi InScript). Vowel keys give vowel signs; Shift gives full vowels.
Phonetic typing: Type Malayalam in English letters as it sounds; consonants join automatically. Capitals give retroflex letters (T D N L).
About the Malayalam script
Malayalam is the official language of Kerala and Lakshadweep, with its own script descended from the old Grantha alphabet. Since the script reform of 1971, school books and newspapers have used a simplified "reformed" style in which several vowel signs and conjuncts are written as separate marks, while older books and many current fonts still show the traditional joined forms. Both styles are the same Unicode text, so whatever you type here appears in the style of the reader's font.

Frequently asked questions

Use Phonetic typing (Manglish): malayaaLaM → മലയാളം. Capitals give retroflex letters (T ട, D ഡ, N ണ, L ള) and M gives ം.
How do I type chillu letters like ൻ and ർ?
Click the chillu quick buttons ൺ ൻ ർ ൽ ൾ ൿ. In phonetic mode a consonant followed by _ gives the virama form, which some fonts show like a chillu.
How do I type ഴ (zha)?
Use the ഴ quick button, or the InScript key (Shift of the period row).
Is this Manglish to Malayalam?
