Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Simplified and Traditional Chinese?
Simplified characters were officially introduced in mainland China from the 1950s and use fewer strokes (for example 龙 instead of 龍). Traditional characters are used in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau and by many overseas communities. Grammar and most vocabulary are shared; the main difference is how characters are written.
Why do Taiwan and Hong Kong options give different results?
Both use Traditional characters, but some preferred forms differ, such as 裡 in Taiwan and 裏 in Hong Kong, or 着 vs 著. The Taiwan with phrases option also swaps mainland vocabulary for Taiwanese terms, for example 软件 → 軟體 (software), 网络 → 網路 (network) and 打印 → 列印 (print).
Is the conversion 100% accurate?
Conversion from Traditional to Simplified is very reliable. Simplified to Traditional is harder because one simplified character can stand for several traditional ones: 发 can be 發 (send) or 髮 (hair), and 干 can be 乾, 幹 or 干. The OpenCC dictionaries handle most cases using phrases, but always proofread important documents such as legal or published text.
What is OpenCC?
OpenCC (Open Chinese Convert) is a widely used open-source project that provides character and phrase dictionaries for Chinese script conversion. This page uses its JavaScript port, opencc-js, which runs entirely in your browser.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The dictionary is downloaded once to your browser and all conversion happens on your device. Your text is not sent to any server; only your last input is saved in your browser's local storage for convenience.
Can I convert subtitles or long documents?
Yes. Open a .txt, .srt or .vtt file and the whole file is converted; timing lines are left unchanged because they contain no Chinese characters. Download the result as a UTF-8 text file and rename it to the original extension if needed.
Does it convert Chinese to pinyin or translate the text?
No. It only changes the script; the words and meaning stay the same. To add tone marks to pinyin, use a pinyin tool, and use a translator if you need another language.
