How to use the Wingdings Translator
Type or paste text into the input box. The Wingdings version appears as you type.
Choose a direction: Auto, Text → Wingdings or Wingdings → Text. Auto decodes when your input is mostly Wingdings symbols.
Check the font preview to see how the same keystrokes look in the real Wingdings font (if it is installed on your device).
Click Copy symbols to paste the Unicode Wingdings into chats, posts or documents.
Use the character chart to look up or insert individual symbols.
The Wingdings alphabet
Wingdings is case sensitive, so the table lists uppercase letters, lowercase letters and digits separately. The symbols shown are the Unicode characters this translator uses, so they look the same as what you copy.
When you type in the Wingdings font, the file still stores ordinary letters; only the font draws them as pictures. Send that text to someone without the font, or paste it into a website, and the pictures turn back into letters. This translator does the opposite: it replaces each letter with a real Unicode symbol, so the pictures survive copying and pasting into messages, social media bios and documents.
Use the Unicode output when you want other people to see the symbols on any device.
Use the font when you are designing a document in a word processor and want the exact Microsoft artwork.
Decoding a puzzle? Paste the symbols with the direction set to Auto or Wingdings → Text; anything that is not a Wingdings symbol is kept as-is.
Frequently asked questions
What is Wingdings?
Wingdings is a dingbat font released by Microsoft in 1990 with Windows 3.1. Instead of letters it draws pictures such as hands, folders, envelopes, zodiac signs and crosses. Each keyboard character is shown as a symbol, so typing in the font produces a string of pictures.
How does this Wingdings translator work?
Each printable keyboard character (codes 33 to 126) is swapped for the Unicode character that matches its Wingdings glyph. Unicode 7.0 (2014) added most of the missing Wingdings pictures, so the output can be copied and pasted anywhere without needing the Wingdings font. Decoding reverses the same table.
Is Wingdings case sensitive?
Yes. Uppercase and lowercase letters map to completely different symbols. For example, capital A is a victory hand ✌ while lowercase a is the Cancer zodiac sign ♋. Lowercase a to i are the zodiac signs ♋ to ♓ and capitals A to Z include hands, faces, a bomb, a skull and several crosses.
Why do some symbols show as empty boxes?
Some Wingdings equivalents, such as the computer, floppy disk and pencil pictures, sit in newer Unicode blocks that older systems or fonts do not draw. The character is still there; it will display on devices with fuller emoji or symbol fonts such as recent Windows, macOS, iOS and Android.
Why do some symbols appear as color emoji?
A few Wingdings pictures, such as the thumbs up 👍, bomb 💣 and droplet 💧, are also emoji in Unicode, so phones and browsers often draw them in color. Their meaning in the translation is the same.
Does Wingdings have the same symbol for every letter in every version?
No. Wingdings 2 and Wingdings 3 are separate fonts with different symbols. This tool uses the original Wingdings font, which is the one people usually mean by the Wingdings alphabet.
Can I translate Wingdings from a screenshot?
Not automatically, but you can look each picture up in the character chart below the translator and click it to add its letter, or type the matching letters to compare.
