About the French keyboard
French uses five diacritics: the acute accent (é), the grave accent (è à ù), the circumflex (â ê î ô û), the diaeresis (ë ï ü ÿ) and the cedilla (ç), plus the ligatures œ and æ. Accents are part of correct spelling and sometimes change meaning: ou (or) and où (where).
AZERTY (France): The French AZERTY layout: é è ç à ù are on their own keys, ^ and ¨ are dead keys (^ then e → ê), numbers need Shift.
Accent shortcuts: Keep your normal keyboard and add accents with a symbol after the letter: e' → é, n~ → ñ, u" → ü. See the cheat sheet below.

Tips for typing French
Accents on capitals: standard French spelling keeps them (État, À bientôt), so use the capital buttons.
Space before ? ! : ; is the French typographic rule (Ça va ?).
Apostrophes: the typographic apostrophe ’ looks nicer than the straight one in l’été.
Use AZERTY if you have a French keyboard; use Accent shortcuts if you have a US or UK one.
Frequently asked questions
How do I type é, è and ê on a QWERTY keyboard?
Choose Accent shortcuts and type the letter followed by a symbol: e' → é, e` → è, e^ → ê and e" → ë. Capitals work the same way (E' → É).
How do I type ç?
On AZERTY ç is on the 9 key. With Accent shortcuts type c; (c followed by a semicolon), or click the ç button. Capital Ç is also in the quick buttons.
Why are the numbers on Shift in AZERTY?
French keyboards put accented letters and punctuation on the number row so they can be typed without Shift; the digits need Shift (or Caps Lock).
How do I type œ as in cœur?
Click the œ quick button (or Œ for capitals). It is a single letter in French spelling, so sœur and œuvre should use it rather than oe.
How do I write French quotation marks?
French uses guillemets with spaces inside: « Bonjour ». Both « and » are among the quick buttons.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The keyboard runs in your browser and your draft stays on your device.
