How to use the Marathi Keyboard
- Choose a typing mode: InScript, Phonetic typing.
- Type with your keyboard (keep “Type with my physical keyboard” ticked) or click the on-screen keys. Each key shows the Marathi character it types.
- Hold Shift or press the on-screen ⇧ key for the second character on each key.
- Use the quick characters below the keyboard for marks and symbols that are not on the main layout.
- Copy the text and paste it anywhere, download it as a .txt file, or search Google for it directly.
About the Marathi keyboard
Marathi is written in Devanagari (Balbodh style). It shares the script with Hindi and Nepali but uses the letter ळ frequently and has its own spelling conventions.
- InScript: InScript Devanagari layout used for Marathi (Windows "Marathi"): vowel keys give matras, Shift gives full vowels, ळ is Shift+L-row key.
- Phonetic typing: Type Marathi in English letters: namaskaar → नमस्कार. Capital L gives ळ, capital letters give retroflex consonants.

Tips for typing Marathi
- Use L for ळ in words like बाळ, कळ.
- Anusvara ं is typed with M.
- ॲ (for English "a" sounds as in ॲप) is in the quick buttons.
- End sentences with . — modern Marathi uses the period, not ।.
Frequently asked questions
How do I type Marathi on an English keyboard?
Choose Phonetic typing and write the word by sound. Capitals give retroflex letters (T ट, D ड, N ण, L ळ, Sh ष). Example: maraaThii → मराठी.
How do I type ळ?
In phonetic mode type capital L: maLaa → मळा. On InScript it is on Shift of the key left of the period.
How do I type ज्ञ (dnya)?
Type GY or jny in phonetic mode, or click the ज्ञ button. On InScript it is Shift+5.
Is Marathi typed the same as Hindi?
Both use Devanagari and InScript, so the keyboard is the same. Marathi uses ळ and ॲ more often, and the eyelash र (ऱ) in some words.
