About the Hindi keyboard
Hindi is written in the Devanagari script, an abugida: every consonant carries an inherent “a” sound, other vowels are shown with matras (vowel signs), and a halant (्) removes the vowel so consonants can join into conjuncts. Both typing methods on this page handle that for you.
InScript: InScript, the Government of India standard layout printed on Hindi keyboards (Windows “Hindi Traditional”). Vowel keys give matras; Shift gives the full vowel.
Phonetic typing: Type Hindi in English letters: namaste → नमस्ते. Capitals give the retroflex sounds (T ट, D ड, N ण, Sh ष).
Hindi letters and where to find them
All 71 Devanagari characters on the main layout, with the key that types them and how to type them phonetically. “Shift+” means hold Shift (or press the on-screen ⇧ key first).

Tips for typing Hindi
Matras come after the consonant. Type क then ि to get कि, even though the ि is drawn to the left.
Use ं (anusvara) for nasal sounds in most words (हिंदी, संगीत); ँ (chandrabindu) marks nasal vowels such as हाँ and माँ.
Full stop: Hindi uses the danda । instead of a period. In phonetic typing press | to insert it.
Install InScript on your device through Windows Language settings (Hindi → Hindi Traditional) or Android Gboard (Hindi) once you are comfortable with it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I type in Hindi on a normal English keyboard?
Pick Phonetic typing and type the word as it sounds in English letters: namaste gives नमस्ते, bharat gives भरत and hiMdI gives हिंदी. Consonants written next to each other are joined with a halant automatically. If you know InScript, choose the InScript tab and your keys produce the letters printed on Hindi keyboards.
What is the InScript keyboard?
InScript (Indian Script) is the standard keyboard layout for Indian scripts defined by the Government of India and built into Windows, macOS, Android and Linux. Vowels sit on the left half and consonants on the right half; unshifted vowel keys give matras (ा ि ी) and Shift gives the full vowels (आ इ ई).
How do I type क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ and श्र?
On InScript these conjuncts are on Shift+7 (क्ष), Shift+6 (त्र), Shift+5 (ज्ञ) and Shift+8 (श्र). In phonetic typing write x or ksh for क्ष, tr for त्र, GY for ज्ञ and shr for श्र. They are also among the quick buttons below the keyboard.
How do I type ड़ and ढ़?
In phonetic typing use capital R for ड़ and Rh for ढ़, as in baRaa → बड़ा and paRhnaa → पढ़ना. On InScript type ड or ढ followed by the nukta key ] (़).
Why do capital letters give different letters in phonetic mode?
Hindi has two sets of t, d and n sounds. Lowercase t, d, n give the dental त, द, न and capitals T, D, N give the retroflex ट, ड, ण. Capitals are also used for long vowels (A आ, I ई, U ऊ) and Sh for ष.
Is my Hindi text saved or uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Your current text is kept only in this browser so it survives a reload; press Clear to remove it.
