How to use the Lao Keyboard
- Click in the text box: the Lao layout is ready.
- Type with your keyboard (keep “Type with my physical keyboard” ticked) or click the on-screen keys. Each key shows the Lao character it types.
- Hold Shift or press the on-screen ⇧ key for the second character on each key.

About the Lao keyboard
Lao is written in an abugida closely related to Thai, with 27 consonants, vowel signs around the consonant and four tone marks.

Tips for typing Lao
- Leading vowels (ເ ແ ໂ ໃ ໄ) are typed before the consonant.
- ໜ and ໝ are ligatures for hn and hm.
- ໆ repeats the previous word.
- ₭ is the kip sign.
Frequently asked questions
How do I type tone marks?
Type the consonant (and vowel) first, then the tone mark key: ່ is on the J-row key and ້ next to it.
Where are the Lao digits?
Hold Shift on the number row for ໑ ໒ ໓ … The Western digits are also widely used.
Do I type ເ before the consonant?
Yes. Leading vowels such as ເ ແ ໂ ໃ ໄ are typed first, as they are written, followed by the consonant.
Are there spaces between Lao words?
Lao, like Thai, normally writes words without spaces and uses spaces between phrases.
