How to use the Gematria Calculator
Type a word or phrase. Put each phrase on its own line to compare several at once.
Read the value cards for the first phrase, or click any row in the table to show that phrase instead.
Pick a cipher in the breakdown to see the value of every letter and the full sum.
Spot matches: values shared by two or more phrases in the same cipher are highlighted in the table.
Copy or download the breakdown or the full table as CSV.
Gematria cipher values for every letter
Each cipher assigns a number to each letter; a word's value is the sum of its letters. Spaces, punctuation and, unless you choose otherwise, digits are skipped.

Hebrew letter values
Classical gematria uses the 22 Hebrew letters, which also served as numerals. Vowel points and cantillation marks are ignored.

Same as the normal form
In Mispar Gadol the five final forms take the values 500 (ך), 600 (ם), 700 (ן), 800 (ף) and 900 (ץ), so a word ending in a final letter gets a larger total. For example, שלום is 300 + 30 + 6 + 40 = 376 in the standard method and 936 in Mispar Gadol.
Worked example
For HELLO: English Ordinal is 8 + 5 + 12 + 12 + 15 = 52; Full Reduction is 8 + 5 + 3 + 3 + 6 = 25; Reverse Ordinal is 19 + 22 + 15 + 15 + 12 = 83; English (×6) is 52 × 6 = 312; and Jewish is 8 + 5 + 20 + 20 + 50 = 103. The digital root shown with each total keeps adding the digits until one digit is left (52 → 5 + 2 = 7).
Frequently asked questions
What is gematria?
Gematria is the practice of giving each letter a number and adding the numbers of a word or phrase. It began with the Hebrew alphabet, whose letters have long doubled as numerals, and was later applied to Greek and English. Words with the same total are said to “match”.
How is English Ordinal (Simple) gematria calculated?
Each letter gets its place in the alphabet: A = 1, B = 2 and so on up to Z = 26. Add the values of all letters. For example, LOVE = 12 + 15 + 22 + 5 = 54. Spaces, punctuation and (by default) digits are ignored.
What is the difference between Full Reduction and Ordinal?
Full Reduction (also called Pythagorean) reduces each letter's ordinal value to a single digit: A–I are 1–9, J–R start again at 1–9 and S–Z are 1–8. LOVE becomes 3 + 6 + 4 + 5 = 18.
What is Jewish gematria in English?
The English “Jewish” cipher used by many online calculators gives A–I the values 1–9, K–S 10–90, T–Z 100–500 in steps, with J = 600, V = 700 and W = 900, mirroring the Hebrew pattern of units, tens and hundreds.
How does Hebrew gematria (Mispar Hechrachi) work?
In standard Hebrew gematria Alef to Tet are 1–9, Yod to Tsadi are 10–90 and Qof to Tav are 100–400. Final letter forms keep the value of the normal letter; in Mispar Gadol the finals Kaf, Mem, Nun, Pe and Tsadi count as 500, 600, 700, 800 and 900 instead.
What is English gematria (×6)?
English gematria, sometimes called the Sumerian cipher, multiplies each ordinal value by 6, so A = 6, B = 12 … Z = 156. Every English gematria total is therefore exactly six times the ordinal total.
Do gematria values have a real meaning?
Gematria is a cultural, religious and recreational tradition. The arithmetic is exact, but matches between words are coincidences of the letter values rather than evidence of a hidden connection.
