How to use the Hungarian Keyboard
- Choose a typing mode: Hungarian QWERTZ, Accent shortcuts.
- Type with your keyboard (keep “Type with my physical keyboard” ticked) or click the on-screen keys. Each key shows the Hungarian character it types.
- Hold Shift or press the on-screen ⇧ key for the second character on each key.
- Use the quick characters below the keyboard for marks and symbols that are not on the main layout.
- Copy the text and paste it anywhere, download it as a .txt file, or search Google for it directly.
About the Hungarian keyboard
Hungarian has 14 vowels: a á e é i í o ó ö ő u ú ü ű. Vowel length is meaningful (kor = age, kór = disease), so long-vowel accents are essential.
- Hungarian QWERTZ: The Hungarian QWERTZ layout: ö ü ó on the number row (0 is left of 1), ő ú ű right of P, é á right of L.
- Accent shortcuts: Keep your normal keyboard and add accents with a symbol after the letter: e' → é, n~ → ñ, u" → ü. See the cheat sheet below.

Tips for typing Hungarian
- The test phrase "Árvíztűrő tükörfúrógép" contains every Hungarian accented letter.
- Use ő/ű, never õ/û.
- Quotes are „like this”, with » « inside.
- Hungarian keyboards are QWERTZ: Z and Y are swapped.
Frequently asked questions
How do I type ő and ű?
On the Hungarian layout ő is right of P and ű is right of ú (next to Enter). With Accent shortcuts type o= → ő and u= → ű.
Why not use õ or û instead?
They are different characters. Fonts and search engines treat õ and û as wrong spellings of Hungarian words, so always use the double acute ő and ű.
Where is 0 on a Hungarian keyboard?
The 0 key sits left of 1, where ` is on US keyboards, because ö ü ó take the right end of the number row.
What do the accents mean?
The acute marks long vowels (á é í ó ú), the umlaut marks front vowels (ö ü) and the double acute marks their long forms (ő ű).
