How to use the Kannada Keyboard
- Choose a typing mode: InScript, Phonetic typing.
- Type with your keyboard (keep “Type with my physical keyboard” ticked) or click the on-screen keys. Each key shows the Kannada character it types.
- Hold Shift or press the on-screen ⇧ key for the second character on each key.
- Use the quick characters below the keyboard for marks and symbols that are not on the main layout.
- Copy the text and paste it anywhere, download it as a .txt file, or search Google for it directly.
About the Kannada keyboard
Kannada is a Dravidian language written in the Kannada script, an abugida closely related to Telugu. Consonants carry an inherent "a", vowel signs attach to them and the virama (್) joins consonants.
- InScript: InScript Kannada layout (Government of India standard, the same key positions as Hindi InScript). Vowel keys give vowel signs; Shift gives full vowels.
- Phonetic typing: Type Kannada in English letters as it sounds; consonants join automatically. Capitals give retroflex letters (T D N L).

Tips for typing Kannada
- Double consonants are typed twice: kannaDa → ಕನ್ನಡ.
- Capital L gives ಳ as in ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು.
- Anusvara ಂ (M) is common before consonants: ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು.
- Switch to InScript if you learned typing at school or work.
Frequently asked questions
How do I type Kannada with an English keyboard?
Use Phonetic typing: kannaDa → ಕನ್ನಡ, beMgaLuuru → ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು. Long vowels are doubled (aa, ii, uu) and capitals give retroflex sounds (T ಟ, D ಡ, N ಣ, L ಳ).
How do I type the short e and o?
In Kannada e and o are short (ಎ ಒ) and E or ee/oo are long (ಏ ಓ). Type e → ಎ, ae → ಏ in this keyboard is written as ee for ಈ, so use the quick buttons or InScript for ಏ ಓ when needed.
Is this the same as Nudi or Baraha?
Nudi and Baraha are Kannada typing programs. This page types standard Unicode Kannada in the browser with a similar phonetic method, without installing anything.
How do I type ಂ (anusvara)?
Type M in phonetic mode, or the quick button ಂ.
