About the Vietnamese keyboard
Vietnamese uses the Latin alphabet with extra letters (ă â đ ê ô ơ ư) and five tone marks (sắc ´, huyền `, hỏi ̉, ngã ~, nặng .). A single syllable can carry both a vowel mark and a tone mark, as in tiếng and người.
Vietnamese layout: Windows Vietnamese layout: ă â ê ô on 1–4, tone marks on 5–9 (type the vowel, then the tone key), đ on 0, ư ơ right of P.
Telex: Telex input, the most popular way to type Vietnamese: aa → â, aw → ă, dd → đ, and tone letters s f r x j at the end of a word: tieengs → tiếng.
VNI: VNI input with digits: 1 sắc, 2 huyền, 3 hỏi, 4 ngã, 5 nặng, 6 â ê ô, 7 ơ ư, 8 ă, 9 đ, 0 removes the tone: tie6ng1 → tiếng.

Tips for typing Vietnamese
Type the tone at the end of the word in Telex; the keyboard puts it on the right vowel.
uow → ươ: nguowif → người.
Proper nouns: type a capital letter normally (Haf Nooij → Hà Nội).
On phones, Gboard and Laban Key support Telex too.
Frequently asked questions
How does Telex typing work?
Type double vowels for the hat (aa → â, ee → ê, oo → ô), w for the hook or breve (aw → ă, ow → ơ, uw → ư), dd for đ, then a tone letter anywhere after the vowel: s sắc, f huyền, r hỏi, x ngã, j nặng. Example: Vieejt → Việt.
How does VNI work?
VNI uses digits after the letters: 1 sắc, 2 huyền, 3 hỏi, 4 ngã, 5 nặng, 6 for â ê ô, 7 for ơ ư, 8 for ă, 9 for đ and 0 to remove a tone. Example: Vie65t → Việt.
Where is the tone mark placed?
The keyboard follows the usual rules: on the vowel with a hat or horn (ê, ơ, â), on the last vowel if the syllable ends in a consonant (toán), and on the first of two vowels at the end of an open syllable (hòa, mía).
How do I undo a mark?
Repeat the key: tieengss gives tiengs back, and aaa gives aa. In Telex, z removes the tone; in VNI, 0 does.
Do I need to install Unikey?
No. This page converts as you type in the browser. Unikey or the built-in Vietnamese input on Windows, macOS and phones do the same system-wide.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser.
