How the translator works
The text is split into words, keeping shorthand that contains symbols together (tl;dr, w/o, b/c). Each word is looked up, ignoring capital letters, in a built-in list of about 230 abbreviations grouped into chat, feelings, time and plans, work and email, gaming, social media and single-word shortcuts like gr8, b4 and 2nite. Plain numbers are never changed. After expansion, the tool can capitalize the first word of each sentence and the pronoun “I”, since shorthand is usually typed in lowercase.
In the other direction, phrases are matched longest first, so “thank you so much” becomes tysm rather than “ty so much”. Single-word swaps (you → u) are optional because they make a message much harder to read.
Tips for clear messages
When texting someone older, a customer or a teacher, write words out in full; not everyone knows the same shorthand.
Tone is easy to misread in text. “k” on its own can come across as cold, while “okay!” or “sounds good” reads as friendly.
Abbreviations change meaning over time and between communities. If a reply could be misunderstood, spell it out.
Frequently asked questions
What does ngl mean in a text?
Ngl means “not gonna lie” (not going to lie). People use it before an honest opinion or a small confession, for example “ngl, that was a great movie”.
What is the difference between idk, idc and idek?
Idk means “I don’t know”, idc means “I don’t care” and idek means “I don’t even know”, which is used to show stronger confusion or exasperation.
Why do some abbreviations have more than one meaning?
Texting shorthand grows informally, so the same letters can mean different things in different groups. For example, “bf” usually means boyfriend but can mean best friend, and “lol” once meant “lots of love”. The translator uses the most common meaning and shows the others in the results list.
Can I use texting abbreviations in work emails?
Some are standard in workplaces, such as FYI, ASAP, EOD, OOO and TBD. Casual ones like lol, ngl or brb are best avoided in formal emails, with customers or with people you don’t know well.
How does English to shorthand work?
The tool looks for phrases from its list, longest first, such as “talk to you later” → ttyl and “be right back” → brb. With “Also shorten single words” on, it also swaps words like you → u, great → gr8 and before → b4.
Does the translator send my messages anywhere?
No. The abbreviation list is built into the page and all translation happens in your browser, so your text never leaves your device.
