Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between è and é?
è (grave) is the open e of è (is) and caffè; é (acute) is the closed e of perché, poiché and né. Both are on the same key of the Italian layout: è normal, é with Shift.
How do I type accented letters on an English keyboard?
Choose Accent shortcuts and type the vowel followed by a backtick for grave (a` → à, e` → è, o` → ò) or an apostrophe for acute (e' → é).
How do I type a capital È?
Italian keyboards have no È key, so people often write E'. Here you can type E` in Accent shortcuts or click the È quick button.
When are accents used in Italian?
Mostly on the last syllable of words stressed there (città, perché, virtù) and to tell apart short words (è "is" vs e "and", là vs la).
