SRT to Text

Open or paste an SRT, VTT or SBV subtitle file and get a readable transcript in one step. Cue numbers, timecodes and formatting tags are removed, lines are merged into paragraphs, and you can keep a timestamp at the start of each paragraph.

How to use the SRT to Text

  1. Open a subtitle file (.srt, .vtt or .sbv) or paste its contents into the left box.
  2. Choose a layout: paragraphs for reading, one subtitle per line, or one continuous block of text.
  3. Set paragraph breaks: a new paragraph starts after a pause of the chosen length or after a number of sentences.
  4. Decide on timestamps and clean-up options such as removing [Music] tags or repeated lines.
  5. Copy or download the finished transcript as a .txt file.

How the transcript is built

  1. Parse the cues. Every timing line starts a new subtitle; the number or identifier above it is discarded.
  2. Clean each line. Formatting tags and HTML entities are removed. With the default options, hearing-impaired descriptions in square brackets or parentheses, such as [door slams] or (laughs), and leading dialogue dashes are removed too.
  3. Remove duplicates. Auto-generated captions show each line twice as the text scrolls up. A line identical to one of the last three lines is skipped.
  4. Merge into paragraphs. Lines are joined with spaces. A new paragraph starts after a silence longer than the pause setting, at a change of speaker, or once the paragraph holds the maximum number of complete sentences.

Timestamps use the start time of the first subtitle in each paragraph, written as [mm:ss], or [h:mm:ss] for videos of an hour or longer. To fix subtitle timing rather than extract text, use the SRT time calculator or the subtitle editor.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an SRT file to text?

Click Open subtitle file and choose the .srt file, or paste its contents. The tool removes the numbers and timecodes, joins the subtitle lines into sentences and paragraphs, and shows the transcript on the right, ready to copy or download as .txt.

Can I keep the timestamps?

Yes. Tick Show timestamps to add a [mm:ss] or [h:mm:ss] time at the start of each paragraph, or at the start of every line when you choose the One subtitle per line layout.

How are paragraphs decided?

Subtitles have no paragraphs, so the tool starts a new one when there is a pause between two subtitles longer than the gap you set (2 seconds by default), when the speaker changes, or when a paragraph already holds the chosen number of sentences.

Does it work with YouTube auto-generated captions?

Yes. Download the captions as .vtt or .sbv and open them here. Auto captions repeat each line in the next cue as they scroll; Remove repeated lines drops those duplicates so every sentence appears once.

What is the difference between SRT and VTT?

Both are plain text subtitle formats with numbered or named cues and start and end times. SRT uses commas in times (00:01:02,500), while WebVTT starts with a WEBVTT header, uses dots (00:01:02.500) and can hold speaker tags, styling and notes.

Are my subtitle files uploaded?

No. The file is read and converted entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
