About the Spanish keyboard
Spanish uses the Latin alphabet plus ñ, the acute accent on vowels (á é í ó ú), the diaeresis ü, and inverted punctuation (¿ ¡) that opens questions and exclamations. Accents change meaning, as in sí (yes) and si (if), so typing them correctly matters.
Spanish (Spain): The Spanish ISO layout: ñ next to L, ´ and ¨ are dead keys (press ´ then a vowel for á é í ó ú), ¿ and ¡ are on the number row.
Accent shortcuts: Keep your normal keyboard and add accents with a symbol after the letter: e' → é, n~ → ñ, u" → ü. See the cheat sheet below.
Spanish letters and where to find them

Tips for typing Spanish
Open questions with ¿ and exclamations with ¡: ¿Dónde estás? ¡Qué bien!
Accents on capitals are required in Spanish (Á, É, Ó); they are not optional.
Use « » or " " for quotations; « » is the traditional Spanish style.
Ordinals: 1.º and 1.ª use the º and ª signs on the key left of 1.
Frequently asked questions
How do I type ñ on an English keyboard?
Switch to Accent shortcuts and type n followed by a tilde: n~ gives ñ and N~ gives Ñ. You can also click the ñ quick button, or use the Spanish layout where ñ sits on the key to the right of L.
How do I type accented vowels like á and é?
On the Spanish layout press the dead key ´ (right of ñ) and then the vowel. With Accent shortcuts type the vowel and an apostrophe: a' → á, e' → é, i' → í, o' → ó, u' → ú.
How do I type ¿ and ¡?
On the Spanish layout ¡ is the key right of 0 and ¿ is Shift + the same key. Both are also among the quick buttons.
What is ü used for in Spanish?
The diaeresis on ü tells you to pronounce the u after g, as in pingüino and vergüenza. Type u" with Accent shortcuts or Shift + the ¨ dead key followed by u on the Spanish layout.
Is the Latin American keyboard different?
Yes, slightly: the Latin American layout moves some symbols (for example ¿ and ´ positions), but ñ and the dead-key method are the same. The accent shortcuts work the same with any keyboard.
