How to use the Nepali Keyboard
- Choose a typing mode: InScript, Romanized (phonetic).
- Type with your keyboard (keep “Type with my physical keyboard” ticked) or click the on-screen keys. Each key shows the Nepali character it types.
- Hold Shift or press the on-screen ⇧ key for the second character on each key.
- Use the quick characters below the keyboard for marks and symbols that are not on the main layout.
- Copy the text and paste it anywhere, download it as a .txt file, or search Google for it directly.
About the Nepali keyboard
Nepali is written in Devanagari, the same script as Hindi and Marathi. Each consonant carries an inherent "a" sound, vowels after consonants become matras, and the halant ् joins consonants.
- InScript: InScript Devanagari layout (also used for Nepali on Windows "Nepali (Devanagari InScript)"). Vowel keys give matras; Shift gives full vowels.
- Romanized (phonetic): Type Nepali in English letters: namaste → नमस्ते, nepal → नेपल (use aa for ा: nepaal → नेपाल).

Tips for typing Nepali
- Capital letters give retroflex sounds: T ट, Th ठ, D ड, Dh ढ, N ण.
- Use aa for the long ā: kaam → काम.
- End sentences with । rather than a period.
- Rupee abbreviation रु is in the quick buttons.
Frequently asked questions
How do I type Nepali in Unicode with an English keyboard?
Use Romanized typing: write the word as it sounds. a, aa, i, ee, u, oo, e, ai, o, au give the vowels; consonants join automatically. Example: kathmandu → कठमन्दु needs capitals for retroflex sounds: kaaThmaaDau → काठमाडौ.
What is the difference between Preeti and Unicode?
Preeti is an old font that maps Nepali shapes to Latin letters; text typed in Preeti looks like gibberish without the font. Unicode, which this keyboard types, works everywhere: Facebook, Google, phones and Word.
How do I type ं (shirbindu) and ँ (chandrabindu)?
In Romanized mode type M for ं and ~ for ँ. Both are also quick buttons.
How do I type the Nepali full stop?
Nepali uses the danda । Type | (pipe) in Romanized mode or click the button.
