About the Polish keyboard
Polish adds nine letters with diacritics to the Latin alphabet: ą ę (ogonek), ć ń ó ś ź (kreska), ż (dot) and ł (stroke). The classic test sentence "Zażółć gęślą jaźń" uses all of them.
Polish (214): The Polish typist layout (214, QWERTZ): ż ś ó on the right of P, ł ą right of L. Most Polish PCs instead use the Polish programmer layout = US + Right Alt; use Accent shortcuts for that.
Accent shortcuts: Keep your normal keyboard and add accents with a symbol after the letter: e' → é, n~ → ñ, u" → ü. See the cheat sheet below.

Tips for typing Polish
ó and u sound the same but spelling matters (góra, but burza).
rz and ż also sound alike; dictionaries help.
Polish quotes open low and close high: „tak”.
ą and ę are nasal vowels, as in są and się.
Frequently asked questions
How do I type ą, ę, ł and the other Polish letters on an English keyboard?
Choose Accent shortcuts and type: a; → ą, e; → ę, l/ → ł, c' → ć, n' → ń, o' → ó, s' → ś, z' → ź and z. → ż. Use capitals for Ą Ę Ł etc.
What keyboard layout do Poles actually use?
Most computers in Poland use the Polish programmer layout: a normal US layout where Right Alt + a gives ą, Right Alt + l gives ł and so on. The shortcut mode here gives the same letters without changing your system settings.
What is the Polish 214 layout?
It is the older typewriter-style QWERTZ layout with ż ś ó ł ą on their own keys. It is still available in Windows as "Polish (214)".
What is the difference between ż and ź?
Both are z sounds: ż (dot) is like the s in "pleasure", ź (acute) is a softer version. Type z. for ż and z' for ź.
