How to make a grocery list that saves time and money
- Plan meals first. Decide what you will cook this week, then list the ingredients you need for each recipe.
- Check what you already have. Look in the fridge, freezer and pantry before you add anything, so you don't buy duplicates.
- Write quantities. "Chicken breast, 2 lb" prevents buying too much or too little.
- Group by aisle. A list sorted by store section means one pass through the store instead of zig-zagging back for forgotten items.
- Stick to the list. Shopping with a written list is a simple way to cut impulse buys.

Frequently asked questions
How does the grocery list sort items by aisle?
Each item name is matched against a built-in list of several hundred common groceries, so 'bananas' goes to Produce, 'cheddar' to Dairy & Eggs and 'paper towels' to Household. Longer names win, so 'peanut butter' goes to Pantry rather than Dairy. Anything unknown goes to Other, and you can change the aisle at any time.
Can I paste a list from my notes app?
Yes. Open Paste a whole list, paste one item per line (or comma-separated) and press Add these items. Bullets and numbering are removed, and quantities like '2 avocados', 'milk - 1 gallon' or 'eggs x2' are picked up automatically.
Is my grocery list saved?
Yes, the list is stored in your browser's local storage on this device, so it is still there next time you open the page. It is never uploaded. To move it to another device, copy it as text or download the PDF.
Can I use the list on my phone while shopping?
Yes. Open this page on your phone and tick items as they go into the cart; checked items are crossed out. Use Remove checked when you are done, or Share list to send the text to a family member.
How do I fit the list on half a page?
Choose Half Letter or A5 paper, or keep US Letter or A4 and use 2 or 3 columns with a smaller text size. Half-size lists are easy to fold and carry.
What is the best order for a grocery list?
Following the store layout saves the most time. Many supermarkets put produce near the entrance, then the bakery and deli, packaged goods in the center aisles, and dairy and frozen food toward the back or end so cold items stay cold. The aisle order in this tool follows that common pattern.
