How to write a recipe card that is easy to follow
List ingredients in the order you use them, with the amount first: "2 cups flour", "1 tsp salt".
Group ingredients for different parts of the dish with a short subheading ending in a colon, such as "For the frosting:".
Write one action per step, starting with a verb (Mix, Bake, Simmer), and include temperatures, pan sizes and doneness cues ("until golden, 12 to 15 minutes").
Add both Fahrenheit and Celsius when you share recipes internationally, for example 350°F (175°C).
Use the notes for make-ahead and storage tips, substitutions, and where the recipe came from.
Gift ideas with printed recipe cards
Printed recipe cards make a thoughtful, low-cost gift: collect family favorites for a wedding shower, tuck a card into a jar of homemade cookie mix, or print a set for a holiday cookie exchange. Use the "Fill the sheet with copies" option to print several copies of the same card on one sheet, then cut them out along the marks. To build a shopping list from your recipe, try the Grocery List Maker.
Frequently asked questions
What size are recipe cards?
The two standard recipe card sizes are 4 × 6 inches (about 102 × 152 mm) and 3 × 5 inches (about 76 × 127 mm), the same as index cards, so they fit standard recipe boxes. 4 × 6 is the most popular because it leaves room for longer ingredient lists.
How do I print recipe cards at home?
Either load 4 × 6 or 3 × 5 index cards or card stock into your printer and print the card-size PDF at 100% scale, or choose 'Letter sheet with cut marks' (or A4) to print on regular paper or card stock and cut the cards out along the corner marks.
What happens if my recipe is too long for one card?
The text size first shrinks automatically, down to a still-readable minimum. If the recipe still does not fit, it continues on a second card that you can print on the back or keep behind the first one. You can also switch to the full-page template.
Can I add a photo to my recipe card?
Yes. Press Add photo and choose a picture from your device. It is cropped to a 3:2 frame and placed above the ingredients. The photo stays in your browser and is only embedded in the PDF you download.
What paper should I use for recipe cards?
Card stock of about 65 to 110 lb (176 to 300 gsm) feels sturdy and survives the kitchen. Check your printer's maximum paper weight, and use the rear or manual feed for thick stock.
Are my recipes saved?
The recipe you are editing is saved automatically in your browser on this device, including a small copy of the photo. Nothing is uploaded. Download the PDF to keep each finished card, or copy the recipe as text.
Can I scale the recipe for more servings?
This tool prints the recipe as you type it. To double or halve the amounts first, use the Recipe Scaler, then paste the adjusted ingredients here.
