How to use the Handwriting Worksheet Generator
Type the text to practice, one word, phrase or sentence per line, or click a preset such as Sight words.
Choose a handwriting font: Print, Slanted print or Cursive.
Set lines per page (fewer lines means bigger letters) and the practice pattern, for example “Trace, then write below”.
Adjust the details: dotted or dashed letters, ruling colors, uppercase or lowercase, paper size and orientation.
Download the PDF or press Print worksheet, and print at 100% scale.
Letter size for each “lines per page” setting
The letter height (top line to baseline) is chosen so the rows fill the page. Values below are for US Letter, portrait, with the name and date line; A4 is about 2 mm taller and landscape is roughly 25% smaller.
Lines per page
Letter height
Typical use
4
33 mm (1.3 in)
Preschool, first letters and short words
5
26 mm (1 in)
Pre-K and kindergarten
6
22 mm (⅞ in)
Kindergarten to grade 1
8
16 mm (⅝ in)
Grades 1–2, short sentences
10
13 mm (½ in)
Grades 2–3
12–14
9–11 mm (⅜–7⁄16 in)
Grade 3 and up, cursive and copywork
Choosing a practice pattern
Trace, then write below is the classic copybook layout: the child traces a line and immediately tries it alone on the blank line underneath.
Trace only works well for beginners still building pencil control, or with “Repeat each line” set to Fill the page.
Example, trace, then write gradually removes support: solid model, dotted guides, then independent writing.
Copy drops tracing entirely for older children practising neat, consistent spacing.
Tips for better handwriting practice
Keep sessions short: five to ten minutes a day beats one long session a week.
Use the green starting dots to teach that most letters start at the top or at the midline.
Practice real sentences the child cares about, such as their address, a favorite quote or weekly spelling words, not only isolated letters.
Watch spacing between words: about the width of a lowercase o (or a finger for young children).
Put a printed page in a sheet protector and use a dry-erase marker to reuse it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a handwriting worksheet with my own sentences?
Type each sentence on its own line in the text box. The generator writes it in dotted tracing letters on handwriting lines, wraps long sentences onto the next line, and adds blank lines for independent writing according to the practice pattern you pick.
What are primary-ruled lines?
Primary ruling is the three-line handwriting paper used in early grades: a solid top line, a dashed midline that marks the height of lowercase letters like a, c and e, and a solid baseline where letters sit. Descenders such as g, p and y drop below the baseline into the space before the next line.
How many lines per page should I choose?
Fewer lines mean taller letters. As a guide for US Letter portrait: 4–5 lines suit preschool and kindergarten (about 1 inch letters), 6–8 lines suit grades 1–2, and 10–14 lines suit older children and cursive practice. The exact letter height is shown under the buttons.
What is the difference between the practice patterns?
“Trace, then write below” puts a blank line under every traced line. “Trace only” fills the page with dotted text. “Example, trace, then write” starts with a solid model, then dotted rows, then blank rows. “Copy” shows a solid example with a blank line to copy it onto, with no tracing.
Can I make cursive handwriting worksheets?
Yes. Choose Cursive to get joined lowercase letters with entry and exit strokes, and cursive capitals. Numbers and punctuation use print forms, as is common in cursive copybooks.
Why were some characters left out?
The worksheet uses hand-drawn single-stroke letterforms for A–Z, a–z, digits, accented Latin letters and common punctuation (. , ! ? ' " : ; - ( ) / & + =). Other symbols and non-Latin scripts are skipped and listed in a notice.
Will the PDF print at the right size?
Yes, the PDF is drawn to exact millimetre dimensions for US Letter or A4. Print at 100% or “Actual size” rather than “Fit to page” so the lines keep their spacing.
