How to use the Name Tracing Worksheet Generator
Type a name, or several names, one per line.
Choose the handwriting style: Print for beginners, Slanted print, or Cursive.
Pick a letter size that matches the child's age, and the tracing look: dotted, dashed or light gray.
Adjust the extras: example row, start dots, fading rows, blank row and the name and date line.
Press Download PDF or Print worksheet. Print at 100% (actual size) so the letter heights stay correct.
Why name tracing helps
A child's own name is usually the first word they learn to write, and it is the most motivating one. Tracing it repeatedly builds letter recognition, fine-motor control and the habit of starting letters at the top. Short daily practice works better than long sessions: two or three traced rows followed by one attempt on the blank row is plenty for preschoolers.
Letter size by age
Setting
Top line to baseline
Typical age / grade
Extra large
1.5 in (38 mm)
Ages 3–4, preschool
Large
1 in (25 mm)
Ages 4–5, pre-K

Ages 5–6, kindergarten and grade 1
Small
½ in (13 mm)
Ages 6–8, grades 1–2

Tips for tracing practice
Start at the green dot. Show the child that most letters start at the top line or the midline and go down.
Capital first, then lowercase. Use “Capitalize first letter” so the name looks the way it is written in school.
Use fading rows so the guide gets lighter row by row and the child gradually writes on their own.
Make it reusable by putting the page in a plastic sleeve and tracing with a dry-erase marker.
Grip and posture matter: a short, thick pencil or crayon is easier for small hands than a long pencil.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a name tracing worksheet?
Type the name in the box, choose print or cursive, a letter size and how many rows you want, then press Download PDF. The preview on the right shows exactly what will be printed.
What letter size should I use for my child?
As a rule of thumb, ages 3 to 4 do best with 1.5 inch (38 mm) letters, ages 4 to 5 with 1 inch letters, kindergarten and first grade with 3/4 inch, and older children with 1/2 inch or smaller. Size here means the height from the top line to the baseline.
What are the green dots?
Each green dot marks where a stroke starts, so children learn the correct starting point and direction instead of tracing letters backwards or from the bottom. You can turn them off.
Does it support cursive?
Yes. The cursive style joins the lowercase letters with connecting strokes, the way cursive is taught in school, and includes cursive capitals. It is a good next step once a child can write their name in print.
Can I make worksheets for a whole class?
Yes. Enter one name per line (up to 40). With Tracing rows per name set to Fill the page, each child gets their own page; with a fixed number of rows, several names share a page.
Which characters are supported?
Letters A to Z in upper and lower case, accented letters such as é, ñ, ü and ç, digits 0 to 9, spaces and basic punctuation such as hyphens and apostrophes. Other characters are skipped and the tool tells you which ones.
Why do the letters print smaller or larger than expected?
Make sure the print dialog is set to Actual size or 100%, not Fit to page. Also check the paper size: choose A4 or US Letter to match your printer paper.
