Attendance grid: one row per name, one column per day.
The Excel file has a drop-down (P, A, L, E) in every day cell and live COUNTIF formulas, so totals and percentages update as you mark attendance in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice.

How to use the Attendance Sheet Template
Enter the sheet details: title, school or organization, class or group and teacher.
Pick the month and which days to include; type any holidays to skip, such as 24-28.
Paste the names, one per line, and press Sort A–Z if you want them alphabetical.
Mark attendance by clicking cells or typing P, A, L or E; totals update instantly.
Download the PDF, blank PDF or Excel file to print, share or keep tracking in a spreadsheet.
Attendance formulas used on the sheet
Every total on the sheet comes from simple counts of the marks in each row or column. These are the same formulas written into the Excel file.

Example
Days marked
P + A + L + E
17 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 20
Days attended
P + L
17 + 1 = 18
Attendance %
(P + L) ÷ days marked × 100
18 ÷ 20 = 90%
Absence %
(A + E) ÷ days marked × 100
2 ÷ 20 = 10%
Present each day
Count of P + L in that day's column
23 of 25 students
Overall rate
All P + L ÷ all marks on the sheet
456 ÷ 480 = 95%
How many school days are in a month?
A month always has 20 to 23 weekdays (Monday to Friday): 28-day February has exactly 20, and 30- or 31-day months have 21 to 23 depending on which weekday the 1st falls on. Subtract holidays and teacher planning days to get the number of days you can actually mark. Ten absences in a 180-day school year is about 5.6% of the year.

Many US schools and states treat missing 10% or more of enrolled days, for any reason, as chronic absenteeism (about 18 days in a 180-day year), which is why the grid highlights anyone under 90%.
Tips for keeping an attendance register
Take attendance at the same moment every session, and mark late arrivals as L rather than changing an A later, so the record shows what happened.
Use E only when your organization's policy calls an absence excused (for example a parent note or approved leave), and keep the supporting note.
Print the blank sheet for field trips, substitutes or days without a computer, then copy the marks into the grid or Excel file afterwards.
Start a new sheet each month: the tool keeps each month's marks separately, so you can switch back to an earlier month at any time.
Frequently asked questions
How is the attendance percentage calculated?
Attendance % = (days present + days late) ÷ days marked × 100. Late arrivals count as present and excused absences count as absences, which is how most school and workplace registers report it. For example, 18 present, 1 late and 1 absent out of 20 marked days is 19 ÷ 20 = 95%. Days left blank are not counted.
Can I skip weekends and holidays?
Yes. Choose Weekdays only to drop Saturdays and Sundays, or Mon–Sat for a six-day week, and type the dates to skip in the holidays box, separated by commas, with a dash for a range, for example 1, 19, 24-28.
What do P, A, L and E mean?
P is present, A is absent, L is late (tardy) but present, and E is an excused absence such as illness with a note or an approved leave. The key is printed at the bottom of every PDF and Excel sheet.
Does the Excel version calculate totals by itself?
Yes. Each day cell has a drop-down list with P, A, L and E, and the P, A, L, E and % columns use COUNTIF formulas, so totals update as soon as you mark attendance in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice Calc. Five spare rows are added for new names.
How many names fit on one page?
On a landscape US Letter page about 29 names fit on the filled sheet and about 25 on the blank sheet with taller rows for handwriting. Longer rosters continue on extra pages with the date header repeated.
Can I use it for employees, clubs or volunteers?
Yes. Change the title and labels to anything you like, such as Staff Attendance, Choir Practice or Volunteer Shifts. For tracking hours worked rather than days present, a timesheet is a better fit.
Are the names stored online?
No. The sheet is built in your browser and the names and marks are saved only in this browser's local storage, separately for each month, so you can come back and continue. The PDF and Excel files are created on your device.
