How to use the Dot Grid Paper Generator
Pick the page size and orientation that match your paper or notebook insert.
Set the dot spacing: 5 mm is the classic bullet journal grid; use ¼ in for an imperial layout.
Choose dot size and color. Light gray or Fine dots stay in the background; Bold dots are easier to see when scanning.
Add a header or page numbers and set how many pages you need. A binding gutter adds extra space on the inner edge.
Download the PDF and print it at 100% ("Actual size"), not "Fit to page", so the spacing stays exact.
How many dots fit on a page?
The number of dots in each direction is the space between the margins divided by the spacing, rounded down, plus one (a row of n spaces has n + 1 dots). With 10 mm margins, 5 mm spacing and no header, you get:

Keep dots subtle. Dots exist to guide your pen, not to compete with it. Fine or Regular dots in gray or light gray disappear behind ink while still being easy to follow.
Use Bold dots for photocopies and scans. Very light dots can drop out when a page is copied or photographed, so pick Bold or Charcoal if the sheets will be copied.
Highlighting every 5th dot makes it quick to count squares when you draw calendars, tables or habit trackers.
Header line: the Title + date line style gives each page a heading area like a daily log or meeting note. Leave the title empty to print a blank heading line you write on by hand.
Printing tips
Set the print scale to 100% so the spacing is exact; most printers cannot print to the very edge, so margins of at least 5 mm are safest. For double-sided printing, set a binding gutter and choose "flip on long edge". If you punch holes for a ring binder, a 10 mm gutter keeps the dots clear of the holes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the standard dot spacing for a bullet journal?
5 mm between dot centers is the most common spacing in dotted notebooks and the default here. It matches roughly one line of handwriting every two dots. Some people prefer 4 mm for small writing or 6 mm and ¼ inch (6.35 mm) for larger hands and drawing.
Will the dots print at the exact spacing I chose?
Yes, as long as you print at 100% scale. In the print dialog choose "Actual size" or set scale to 100%. "Fit to page" or "Shrink oversized pages" scales the whole sheet slightly, which makes 5 mm dots come out at about 4.7 mm.
Which page size should I use for an A5 notebook or planner?
Choose A5 (148 × 210 mm) to print inserts for A5 binders and traveler notebooks with an A5 cover. Half Letter (5.5 × 8.5 in) is the US equivalent used by many discbound and ring planners. To print two A5 pages on one A4 sheet, print the A5 PDF with your printer's "2 pages per sheet" option and check the scale.
What does the binding gutter do?
It adds extra blank space on the inner edge of each page, where holes are punched or pages are stitched. Page 1, 3, 5 and so on get the gutter on the left, and even pages get it on the right, so the space lines up when you print double-sided.
Why is the grid centered?
The number of whole dot spaces rarely fits a page exactly, so there is always a little leftover. Centering splits that leftover equally between the left and right (and top and bottom) margins so the page looks balanced. Turn it off to start the grid exactly at the top-left margin.
Is the PDF vector or an image?
The PDF is vector: each dot is a tiny round shape, so it prints crisp at any printer resolution and a 60-page file stays small. The PNG option gives a 300 DPI image of the current page for apps such as GoodNotes or Notability, or for printing from a photo app.
Is this dot grid paper free to use?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up and no watermark, and the pages are generated in your browser. You can print them for personal, classroom or office use.
