Convert any text into numbers using alphabet positions (A=1, B=2 … Z=26), or decode a string of numbers back into letters. Switch to A=0, a reversed alphabet or ASCII codes, choose the separator and see the total value of each word.

How the conversion works
For the A=1 system the number is the letter's ASCII code minus 64 (upper case) or minus 96 (lower case): H = 72 − 64 = 8. For A=0 subtract one more, and for the reversed alphabet use 27 minus the A=1 value. The letter sum always uses A=1 … Z=26, the most common convention for word-value puzzles.
Frequently asked questions
What is the A1Z26 cipher?
A1Z26 is the simple substitution in which each letter is replaced by its position in the alphabet: A=1, B=2 … Z=26. HELLO becomes 8 5 12 12 15. It is popular in puzzles, escape rooms and kids' secret codes, but provides no real security.
How do I find the sum of the letters in a word?
Add the alphabet positions of every letter. For example CAT = 3 + 1 + 20 = 24. The tool shows the total for the whole text and for each word.
What is the difference between A=1 and ASCII codes?
A=1 numbers only the 26 letters, so upper and lower case give the same number. ASCII (and Unicode) gives every character its own code: A = 65, a = 97, space = 32, ! = 33.
How do I decode numbers back to letters?
Choose Numbers → Letters, pick the same system that was used to encode, and paste the numbers separated by spaces, commas or dashes. Put a slash or a double space between words.
What is the reversed alphabet code?
It numbers the alphabet backwards: A=26, B=25 … Z=1. Combined with A=1 it gives the letter's position counted from the end; in letter form it is the Atbash cipher.
Why do some numbers show as a question mark?
In the alphabet systems only 1-26 (or 0-25) correspond to letters. Numbers outside that range, or tokens that are not numbers, cannot be decoded and are marked with ?.
