Why convert Word files to plain text?
Clean copy and paste. Text pasted from Word into web forms, CMS editors, code or email often drags hidden formatting along. Plain text removes it.
Data and search work. .txt files are easy to search with grep, to index, to diff in version control, or to load into scripts and spreadsheets. Tab-separated tables paste straight into Excel or Google Sheets.
AI tools and translation. Chatbots, translation tools and text analyzers work best with clean text, without the overhead of the .docx package.
Archiving. Plain UTF-8 text opens on any device and will stay readable for decades.
A .docx file is a ZIP archive containing XML. The text lives in word/document.xml, list numbering in numbering.xml and footnotes in footnotes.xml. This tool unzips the file in your browser, reads those parts and rebuilds the text in reading order.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a DOCX file to TXT?
Drop the .docx file onto the tool or click Choose .docx files. The text is extracted in your browser within a second or two; click Download .txt to save it, or Copy text to paste it elsewhere.
Can I convert several Word files at once?
Yes. Select or drop as many .docx files as you like. Each one is listed with its word count, and Download all as ZIP saves a .txt for every file in a single archive. You can also merge them into one combined .txt with a header line per file.
Does it keep paragraphs and bullet points?
Yes. Paragraphs are separated by a blank line by default (or a single line break if you prefer), and bulleted and numbered lists keep their markers and indentation. Turn off Keep list markers to get just the item text.
What happens to tables, images and formatting?
Tables become rows of text with cells separated by tabs, pipes or one cell per line. Images, fonts, colors and bold or italic formatting are dropped, because plain text cannot store them.
Can it open old .doc files?
No. The old binary .doc format (Word 97-2003) is different from .docx. Open the file in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs and save it as .docx first, then convert it here.
Which line endings should I choose?
Unix (LF) works everywhere, including modern Notepad, macOS and Linux. Choose Windows (CRLF) only if an older Windows program shows everything on one line.
Are my documents uploaded?
No. The .docx files are unzipped and read with JavaScript inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and closing the tab removes them.
